Lott got one vote more than Alexander.

Lott:

"I want to say this about my state: When Strom Thurmond ran for president, we voted for him. We're proud of it. And if the rest of the country had followed our lead, we wouldn't have had all these problems over all these years, either," Lott said at last week's party.

Earlier Monday, Lott issued a statement, saying, "My comments were not an endorsement of his positions of over 50 years ago, but of the man and his life."

But some Democrats were angry. Civil rights activist Jesse Jackson called for Lott to resign, and former Vice President Al Gore told CNN that the comment was "racist."

Lott should have never been thrown overboard because the media said he was a racist. He got screwed by many people. Including the admin.

That said he should have been removed, just not at that time and not because of a statement mangled into something it was not.

He is no friend to conservatives, no friend to Republicans, and he spent the last few years working behind the scenes with McCain to screw us and his own constituents over. Never more so then with the Gang he was a part of behind the scenes when the pressure got too hot to lead the effort.

I suppose some Republicans might think this is a good thing, keep your enemy close so he won't screw you in his attempts to take revenge over the past. Trouble is that he'll still attempt to screw us on policy as he always did.

Yet who was the other choice? Lamar? Either way there was a downside, and little upside to this "election" by the Republicans.

The only guy I'm pleased about is Ensign.

I just love it when I read threads full of support on FR. hah.

Hopefully, Lott will not bend to the moderate initiatives of the White House this time around. Maybe he will be the conservative he used to be. I wonder if he feels as "liberated" as Rush Limbaugh.

That is my greatest concern. Keep him off the TV he is too slushy when he speaks. I always wonder what he just said.

"Trent Lott has supported affirmative action all of his political career. (Even though AA is wrong.) He's not a racist -- let alone a segregationist."

Correction. I guess he is only a more recent convert to AA, and that he may have voted against it years ago. (Not that that is a necessarily a good thing.)

Still, I don't buy the media's spin on his remarks. Or your friends. It was a pleasantry and standard boilerplate to say about old politicians who have run for higher office and lost.

You can go through the Congressional Record and see hundreds of exactly the same remarks, word for word.

When Trent Lott is introduced as a racist because of his comments about Strom Thurmond, we need to remind people of this

I never thought he was a racist.
As a matter of fact I thought his pc conditioning made him feel like he was.
Like he was guilty of something (even if he wasn't.)

I'm just sick to death of Senators that cowtow to dems even when we're in the majority.
(which of course we're not any more)
I think it's time for someone else.

What's wrong with having Mitch McConnell in charge?

Right now we should be focused on the dems and their leadership fight. If you'd rather turn the spotlight on republicans, be my guest. Don't know what all that bashing has gotten you so far but it's your call.

I'm not saying Lott is racist, but you know that's how he'll be introduced.

Of course, as the link I showed upthread reflects, it didn't matter to the media that Fulbright was Clinton's mentor and was honored repeatedly by Clinton. Fulbright was a segregationist and voted repeatedly against Civil Rights legislation.

You've proven yourself to be little more than a political hack.

Y'all seriously need to stop.

Jveritas has proved to be invaluable! He has done more for our country and the war effort, than 85% of the elected CONgresscritters.

See here!
