Seven-Year-Old on Mission for His Mom - Lobbies Mexican Lawmakers to Prevent Her Deportation From U.S.
Four-foot-tall second-grader Saul Arellano, a U.S. citizen, was to stand before 500 members of the lower house of the Mexican Congress on Tuesday to plead for their help in lobbying Washington to stop the deportation of his migrant mother, who has taken refuge in a Chicago church.
His fight is being closely watched on both sides of the border: The result could set a precedent for more than 3 million children, like him, who are Americans born to at least one parent who is in the U.S. illegally.
While his mother, Elvira Arellano, stays inside the Adalberto United Methodist Church on Chicago's West Side, Saul has joined a months-long campaign on her behalf, speaking out from Los Angeles to Washington, where he handed a White House guard his letter to U.S. President George W. Bush.
"I want to stay with my mom in the United States," Saul said Tuesday, surrounded by cameramen and reporters in the Congress as he waited to speak to lawmakers.
Asked if he was nervous, he turned and buried his face in the lap of Emma Lozano, executive director of the Chicago-based immigration-rights group Centro Sin Fronteras, who accompanied Saul on the trip.

Anchor baby?
"Centro Sin whose Fronteras"?
Mighty big-hearted of her, to throw open our borders like that.
"Anchor baby?"
Yes, and more than that. Anyone know the results of this?:

COOK COUNTY CHICAGOANS...UNITE - 11/14/06 (tomorrow) SANCTUARY VOTE?
BACKGROUND:
(ILLEGAL) Immigrant Mother Defends Son's Future
.............."Cook County Commissioner Roberto Maldonado, inspired by Arellanos courage, drafted a bill calling for the county, which includes Chicago, to be designated a sanctuary for immigrants. The measure would prohibit county employees from asking people about their immigration status, thereby ensuring that undocumented immigrants would have access to all county services."......

OBL ACTION TAKEN:
CHICAGO (WBBM) -- A Cook County Board committee has narrowly passed a proposal to make the county a sanctuary for illegal immigrants. WBBM's Steve Miller reports. The vote was 3 to 2 in committee - on a move to make Cook County a safe space for undocumented immigrants. Even the sponsor, Commissioner Roberto Maldonado, called it symbolic, because nothing would stop federal agents from making immigration raids. "And it is symbolic to tell the people of Cook County who happen to be undocumented that, look, we recognize that we are a county of immigrants." Commissioner Tony Peraica voted against the resolution. He says the County Board has no jurisdiction. "And I believe this particular issue would create a false sense of hope in people's minds that they can, in fact, continue to stay in an illegal capacity with impunity." The resolution also forbids county employees from asking people about their immigration status.
The resolution still has to go to the full board."

COACHELLA: Another Alta California city votes
to become an "Immigrant Sanctuary"
by
Hector Carreon
La Voz de Aztlan
Los Angeles, Alta California - March 24, 2006 - (ACN) Yet another city council in Alta California has voted to become an "Immigrant Sanctuary". Coachella, a city 125 miles east of Los Angeles and with 30,957 residents, passed a resolution that states "the city will provide a safe, healthy and dignified place to live for its immigrant communities, regardless of immigration status."
Coachella Mayor Jesse Villarreal said that the undocumented immigrants living in the city can rest easy knowing that the local police wont act as border patrol and turn them in. The resolution will also protect US citizens of Mexican descent from being harassed by the police who could mistake them of being undocumented. . The city populations is 97% Latino.
The "IMMIGRANT SANCTUARY MOVEMENT" is rapidly expanding in Alta California with the cities of Maywood, Los Angeles, Huntington Park, Pomona and San Francisco having already passed similar measures. The city council resolutions are attempts to prevent local police from arresting the undocumented if the anti-immigrant legislation presently before the US Senate passes.
The Border Protection, Antiterrorism and Illegal Immigration Control Act, before the U.S. Senate, authorizes local authorities to enforce federal immigration law, proposes building a $2 million fence along the border and criminalizes those who help the undocumented. It would also authorize police agencies to arrest undocumented immigrants.
The Coachella resolution passed by its city council is credited to the efforts of the Comite Latino that attended the Mexicano/Latino Leadership Immigration Summit in Riverside. At that summit meeting the Vice Mayor of the City of Maywood, Felipe Aguirre, gave a presentation on how his city became an "Immigrant Sanctuary". His presentation was very inspirational and it gave birth to the IMMIGRANT SANCTUARY MOVEMENT. The federal government has threaten to stop the funding for certain city programs but Vice Mayor Aguirre simply told the feds, "Keep your money!"
The "Immigrant Sanctuary Movement" within the various cities will most probably join up with efforts by the Catholic Church. Los Angeles Cardinal Rogelio Mahony has gone on record saying that if the "Sensenbrenner Legislation" passes, he will instructs his priests to DISOBEY certain measures of the proposed law that makes it a criminal act to help undocumented people in need. WE MAY BE WITNESSING THE BEGINNING OF MASSIVE CIVIL DISOBEDIANCE BY HUGE NUMBERS OF PEOPLE, ORGANIZATIONS AND INSTITUTIONS.
The City of Coachella has a long history revolving around agriculture. Cesar Chavez once marched through the city in his struggle for farm worker rights and today the area's agricultural industry still relies mostly on Mexican and Mexican-American workers.
He can stay. She has to go. The law's the law.
I'm getting sick and tired of people exploiting kids for political purposes. Look at all of the political voting amendments that have passed and not passed just because of children in the advertisement. Look at all the money gone to charities using kids to plead for the cause in advertisements. Now, using a anchor baby child as a boy genius going to Mexico to have them lobby Washington for his illegal mother to stay in the U.S.. Then writing a letter to Pres. Bush and giving it to the guard to ask for her to stay and then whenever an answer from a question is ask him, he hides his face. Has Saul actually talked to anyone? Has he answered any questions? I would say not. All he is is a pawn being used for political purposes and here again because he is a cute little innocent boy I/we are not or can not say anything bad and only go along with his cause. Now, if he doesn't work the lobbyist will bring out more and more cute little innocent children to show the public how bad the public is for not wanting their parent or parents to stay in the U.S. Yes, it's just another maneuver to open your harts, checkbooks and boarders.
Well...
It would be par for the course if armed government agents raided the church and ripped the mother away from there and sent her back to Mexico to be with the rest of her family...
hmmmmm, Seems like I've heard this story before somewhere...
Elian Gonzales??? Yep thats the one...
NOT.
Hello? McFly?
Where's the MSM condemnation of the Mother for putting her child into a mess like this?
Deport him anyway.
Hmm... This whole situation reminds me of something that happened a while ago. Does the name Emilio Gonzales ring a bell? Maybe we should have a bunch of men armed with machine guns take him back to Mexico. Does anyone know if Janet Reno is available for this case? Oh wait, she only sends children back to countries ruled by communist dictators!
Don't you love it when libs get angry at conservatives for doing something that looks bad, when libs have done things a thousand times worse? It's like a serial killer calling a jaywalker a jerk.
Sorry, I meant ELIAN. (brain fart)
Saul is an American citizen. There is no legal basis for the recommendation that someone "take him back to Mexico."
That mother of his, on the other hand . . .
ping
Since when is wanting something sufficient reason to justify breaking the law?
Where's the dad?
He's just out having the illegitimate children that everyday Americans can't be bothered to have...
Remember that face when, in ten years, he walks into a voting booth along with millions of other anchor babies to vote in reparations for their madres and padres.
No. It's not. It's a liberal judges interpretation of the law. Anyone who agrees with it is equally libera.
