After 90 years in San Francisco high schools, the [JROTC] must go, the S.F. school board decided Tuesday night.
The board voted 4-2 to eliminate the popular program, phasing it out over two years.
...JROTC cadets at the board meeting burst into tears or covered their faces after the votes were cast.

Their position was summed up by a former teacher, Nancy Mancias, who said, "We need to teach a curriculum of peace.''
The board's move to dismantle the popular program was led by board members Dan Kelly and [gay] Mark Sanchez with support from Sarah Lipson and Eric Mar...against it were Jill Wynns and Norman Yee. Board member Eddie Chin was absent.
"We don't want the military ruining our civilian institutions," said Sandra Schwartz, of the American Friends Service Committee, an organization actively opposing JROTC nationwide. "In a healthy democracy ... You must contain the military."
Students, parents and school staff from each of the seven high schools converged outside the school board meeting carrying signs and waving at cars, some of which honked in support.
At least 100 cadets edged into Franklin Street waving their signs before being pushed back to the sidewalk by their ROTC instructors.
Yet, in the end, the effort -- one of several rallies in the last several weeks -- fell on deaf ears.
"This is where the kids feel safe, the one place they feel safe," Robert Powell, a JROTC instructor at Lincoln High School and a retired Army lieutenant colonel, said earlier in the evening. "You're going to take that away from them?"
Opponents acknowledged the program is popular and even helps some students stay in school and out of trouble.

"It's basically a branding program, or a recruiting program for the military," Kelly said before the meeting.

Newsom also said he believed the vote would push more city residents away from the public schools.
"You think this is going to help keep families in San Francisco?" the mayor added. "No. It's going to hurt."
Newsom talks out of both sides of his mouth. In an article in this morning's San Francisco Examiner -- a free tabloid with a more balanced editorial staff, but mostly loaded with wire stories -- there was this overlooked detail:
Board member Eddie Chin was absent.
Newsom said he was appreciative that the school board waited to take a vote on the controversial proposal until the election.Because this would have been an attack on Nancy Pelosi and the quote-unquote values of San Francisco, Newsom said. And the cheap-shot artists like [Bill] OReilly and Fox would have exploited it.
That's funny...I am at this moment watching the waning minutes of the Board of Ed live on the SF Government's website, and Eddie Chin was there. He must have conveeeeniently been unavailable during the JROTC vote.
San Francisco Values in action. Have at us, O'Reilly.
I don't want to ever hear them calling for help from our military.
Sometimes the stupidity of people leaves me speechless Ping
The is person does not live in the real world.
San Francisco truly disgusts me. What a bunch of useless canon fodder!
A healthy democracy represses its military? Exactly how long is this clueless know-nothing expecting that healthful democracy to last?
"We don't want the military ruining our civilian institutions," said Sandra Schwartz, of the American Friends Service Committee..."
Except, of course, for the times the military protects those institutions.
How do you ask a soldier to be the last one to die for a lie like San Francisco?
"In a healthy democracy ... You must contain the military."
Hmmm...and will she propose to contain the jihadis as well, or are they a more welcome component of a healthy democracy???
Nothing seems to amaze me anymore.
Would have been a good object lesson, after all.
My grandparants purchase of that first house made three generations of our family, financially. I have a picture of it, in my office.
Now, I am not sure if SF is still part of the US.
"We need to teach a curriculum of peace.''

And in the backround is that hippy song..."come to San Francisco with flowers in your hair..."
I really wish we could send scum like this to the middle east and let them see how long they'd last with the "peaceful" terrorists.
This isn't stupidity. This is pure evil.
L.N. Smithee regrets the error. And that he has to call himself the product of San Francisco public schools.
I've seen JROTC cadets around San Fran and they are almost exclusively Chinese and Hispanic kids, and are very enthusiastic about what they're doing. It gets results, gets kids off their rear ends and out of the house. The supes killed one of the few school programs in the city that actually has a positive effect. If they changed the name from JROTC to the Union of Communist Youth they'd probably agree to keep it around.
Just recently, perhaps this week, Cindy Shewitch said "Freedom isn't free was wrong, and if freedom is free, or the would call it expensivedom"
and our new House Leader Nancy Pelosi is a SF Lib/Dem. Way to go America, that a way to get out the vote....you reap what you sow....live with it sideliners.
