Toys for Tots rejects Jesus dolls

LOS ANGELES, California (AP) -- A talking Jesus doll has been turned down by the Marine Reserves' Toys for Tots program.

A Los Angeles company offered to donate 4,000 of the 1 foot-tall dolls, which quote Bible verses, for distribution to needy children this holiday season. The battery-powered Jesus is one of several dolls manufactured by one2believe, a division of the Valencia-based Beverly Hills Teddy Bear Co., based on biblical figures.

But the charity balked because of the dolls' religious nature.

Toys are donated to kids based on financial need and "we don't know anything about their background, their religious affiliations," said Bill Grein, vice president of Marine Toys for Tots Foundation, in Quantico, Virginia.

As a government entity, Marines "don't profess one religion over another," Grein said Tuesday. "We can't take a chance on sending a talking Jesus doll to a Jewish family or a Muslim family."

Michael La Roe, director of business development for both companies, said the charity's decision left him "surprised and disappointed."

"The idea was for them to be three-dimensional teaching tools for kids," La Roe said. "I believe as a churchgoing person, anyone can benefit from hearing the words of the Bible."

Can someone check if a Mohammed doll is accepted?

No, and I'm sure a book about celebrating Hanukkah would have been rejected as well as inappropriate for Christian children.

Yeah, but the salvation army rejects any used furnishings or appliance that appear to have been, well, used.

We must not live in a very poor nation when I had furniture rejected for donation because it was no longer in style (and FORGET about a used baby car seat).

A talking Jesus doll seems sacreligious to me. You want some kid tossing it around a mud puddle? Bad idea altogether. Good for Toys for Tots (I don't really know their motives and don't care)

Is this about giving kids gifts they'll like, or you making a political statement? It's obvious that T4T drew the line here because the gift was given to make a point, and the point was not to entertain kids or give them something fun when their parents can't afford to.

Why do people have to politicize Toys for Tots?

>I unapologetically submit that Jesus is not a toy.<

My first thought, although I think such a doll is a bit sacreligious.

It's rude to give a jewish kid a present for Christmas anyway.

The issue is simple - it's simply rude to give a Jewish kid a Jesus doll for Christmas.

Um, why would a Jewish child be getting a Christmas present in the first place?

"It's just that they can't guarantee delivery of these toys based on religion."

Have them pick then! Give me a break! This is why no good deed goes unpunished. THEN MAKE IT GUARANTEED!!! THEIR MARINES FOR GOSH SAKES!!!

Hanukkah would have been rejected as well as inappropriate for Christian children.

WHY?
It is a biblical story of the Jews so is Jesus a story from the Jews, so what is inappropriate?

Yeah,
I have a feeling Talking Jesus isn't near as much fun for a kid as Talking Elmo.

Isn't Toys for Tots a Christmas program?

Christmas is celebrated by many people, including many non-Christians. The holiday as enjoyed in the mass media and served by charities like Toys For Tots really has nothing to do with the birth of Christ. There's a healthy debate about that every year which tends to get drowned out by pointless debates about whether someone is persecuted because their Walmart greeter doesn't say "Merry Christmas" to everyone as they enter the store.
