Toys for Tots rejects Jesus dolls

LOS ANGELES, California (AP) -- A talking Jesus doll has been turned down by the Marine Reserves' Toys for Tots program.

A Los Angeles company offered to donate 4,000 of the 1 foot-tall dolls, which quote Bible verses, for distribution to needy children this holiday season. The battery-powered Jesus is one of several dolls manufactured by one2believe, a division of the Valencia-based Beverly Hills Teddy Bear Co., based on biblical figures.

But the charity balked because of the dolls' religious nature.

Toys are donated to kids based on financial need and "we don't know anything about their background, their religious affiliations," said Bill Grein, vice president of Marine Toys for Tots Foundation, in Quantico, Virginia.

As a government entity, Marines "don't profess one religion over another," Grein said Tuesday. "We can't take a chance on sending a talking Jesus doll to a Jewish family or a Muslim family."

Michael La Roe, director of business development for both companies, said the charity's decision left him "surprised and disappointed."

"The idea was for them to be three-dimensional teaching tools for kids," La Roe said. "I believe as a churchgoing person, anyone can benefit from hearing the words of the Bible."

Isn't Toys for Tots a Christmas program?

If a kid in Afghanistan gets caught with a Jesus doll in his hand, he'll be writing in school with a stump

I agree with you....
It's amazing how people will say speaking of Jesus or Merry Christmas might be offensive to some people. I am still wondering what offense might be taken???

Did Jesus say Kill the Jews and the Muslims and the Hindus and Buddhists???

NO..
He said *Love your neighbors as yourself* and forgive others 7x70. Maybe if he would of said Kill your neighbors if they don't agree with you and tell everyone to *Do thier own thing*, because It's your thing do what you want to do then he would of been embraced by the heathen society we live with daily...

From the Toys for Tots website:

GOAL: The primary goal of the Foundation is the same as that of the overall Toys for Tots program: i.e. - to deliver, through a shiny new toy at Christmas, a message of hope to needy youngsters that will motivate them to grow into responsible, productive, patriotic citizens and community leaders. (emphasis mine)

I respectfully submit that if you would be offended by a Jesus doll, then you should not accept any Christmas presents. Please. This PC crap is ridiculous!

This isn't the Toys for Dirty Old Men program.

"Has anyone tried to see if buddha dolls or Muhammed dolls get the same sort of treatment? "

The muhammed dolls had to be recalled. They kept beating Barbie, chopping off Ken's head, having sex with "Baaa" the stuffed lamb, and then blowing up.

As such, they were a safety hazard.

I smell a set up by a company trying to make trouble and move product..."hey let's offer them a Jesus doll (a toy no kid is gonna want anyways) and then when they REJECT it, we'll get press coverage and SELL MILLIONS of 'em....yeah...that's the ticket. "Intolerance=millions of dollars."

Especially suspicious that this runs on CNN website...

I don't think a Mo doll would be approved of--look how badly the whole pictorial represenation thing went.

Maybe if his face was blacked out though.

Very true. Too bad Islam rejets what Jesus actually said.

Sigh. This is just BS. The issue is simple - it's simply rude to give a Jewish kid a Jesus doll for Christmas. Come on people, have some sense. This has *nothing* to do with Jesus being a threat. It's just that they can't guarantee delivery of these toys based on religion.

Wow, you missed the point entirely...Do you actually know, kids asking for a Jesus doll? Seriously?

A Skateboard or a pocketknife would be cool to a kid...
