Toys for Tots rejects Jesus dolls

LOS ANGELES, California (AP) -- A talking Jesus doll has been turned down by the Marine Reserves' Toys for Tots program.

A Los Angeles company offered to donate 4,000 of the 1 foot-tall dolls, which quote Bible verses, for distribution to needy children this holiday season. The battery-powered Jesus is one of several dolls manufactured by one2believe, a division of the Valencia-based Beverly Hills Teddy Bear Co., based on biblical figures.

But the charity balked because of the dolls' religious nature.

Toys are donated to kids based on financial need and "we don't know anything about their background, their religious affiliations," said Bill Grein, vice president of Marine Toys for Tots Foundation, in Quantico, Virginia.

As a government entity, Marines "don't profess one religion over another," Grein said Tuesday. "We can't take a chance on sending a talking Jesus doll to a Jewish family or a Muslim family."

Michael La Roe, director of business development for both companies, said the charity's decision left him "surprised and disappointed."

"The idea was for them to be three-dimensional teaching tools for kids," La Roe said. "I believe as a churchgoing person, anyone can benefit from hearing the words of the Bible."

but as an American holiday

Because it's not an American holiday. The Fourth of July is an American holiday.

It wasn't the vatican, it was one old looney cardinal and known communist that got passed over for promotion. He's a nut and everyone but Al-Reuters ignores him.

Heck, I know that and am not remotely Roman Catholic.

Thanks for the post. Can't blame anyone for not giving Toys for Tots. Suggest you get toys and bring them to kids in local hospital or give them to church people to distribute to the poor.

The Salvation Army always gets my money each year. It's tradition in our family to be a Bell Ringer, too. :)

I was at a store today and they asked me to donate to "Toys for Tots." Since this was in Madistan, the clerk couldn't speak Eglish, so it was a little hard to explain to her about the leftist, anti-religion nuts that have now infiltrated every corner of society.

So, I just said "No, thanks." That, she understoood. ;)

"It wasn't the vatican, it was one old looney cardinal and known communist"

"Cardinal Renato Martino made his comments at a news conference presenting Pope Benedict's message for the Roman Catholic Church's World Day of Migrants and Refugees, in which the Pope called for more laws to help immigrants integrate."

Sounds like he is the equivalent of Tony Snow. So......

"Jesus is such a threat."

What part of the following don't you get?

"As a government entity, Marines "don't profess one religion over another," Grein said Tuesday. "We can't take a chance on sending a talking Jesus doll to a Jewish family or a Muslim family.""

Toys are toys, they're not tools for evangelism.

"Can someone check if a Mohammed doll is accepted?"

It's not. Possession of a mohamed doll will get you blown up.

Considering the hell I put my GI Joes through, not getting a Jesus doll for Christmas is probably a good thing.

Jesus died for my sins, He has never told me to die so that others may believe in Him.

"Toys are toys, they're not tools for evangelism."

You know, when Mohammed came into power, he banned all dolls. (Same reason, idolatry, graven image and all that) But when he married his nine year old cousin, i think, Aiysha?, he secretly let her play with them because it made her happy.

Again, [most] people don't worship trees. [except for greens, and I am not a green] Christmas Trees have always been considered secular, not religious.

"I fear that Christians have a tendency to yell "persecution" in this country over trivial issues like Jesus dolls, while we ignore REAL persecution around the world."

Probably because it seems like Christianity is being attacked all over this country to a degree and in a manner unlike before. Figuring prominently in this worry are schools and municipalities changing the names of traditional holidays (Winter Holiday), eliminating holiday celebration (no more Christmas songs or symbols on public property) and even infringing on the free exercise of religion (no more prayer at sports events-coach can't even take a knee with the teamm - or other school ceremonies). I can certainly understand the desire to swat at everything.

Of course, the Salvation Army is a masonic conspiracy, it being founded by a freemason and all.

:)

I can see the uproar if they had excepted the dolls /sarc off. Better safe than sorry.

"He has never told me to die so that others may believe in Him."

John 15:13 Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.

Sit and ponder that awhile, my friend.

Yes! They don't celebrate it *as Christians*, but as an American holiday. I don't get what's so crazy about this.

You mean they have fireworks, bbqs, Pin the Tail on the Donkey, and other fun things for Christmas? My, the things I've missed about Christmas over the years. We must make sure to accomodate their budding cultural Christmas activities into our own!

Then fight those battles. Don't waste your energy allowing yourself to be crassly manipulated by a company who is trying to get people all wound up in order to sell more Jesus dolls this Christmas.

If Christians would act less like Ned F****ing Flanders, perhaps people would stop having so much fun at our expense.

Now, who is selling them, and how much? Do they have a website? Jacob (but we call him Jake around his friends) is gonna love it.
