RTTNews) - Ford Motor Co plans to set up a plant in India to manufacture diesel engines, as the consumers are shifting to more fuel-efficient option in the fast-growing car market.
The new plant would have a capacity to manufacture around 100,000 units of the 1.4-litre Duratorq engine each year, according to sources. Ford, which manufactures 60,000 vehicles per annum at its Maramalainagar plant near Chennai, presently buys petrol engines from Hindustan Motors Ltd and imports diesel engines.
Ford's Endeavour sport utility is a diesel model and 70% of sales of its Fiesta model have diesel engines. The Fiesta is powered by the 1.4-litre Duratorq diesel engine. Diesel's share of the Indian passenger vehicle market is forecast to rise to 35% by 2010 from 30% now, as per estimates.

Rest in Peace, old friend, your work is finished.......
Diesel "Ping" List: If you want on or off the DIESEL "KNOCK" LIST just FReepmail me........
This is a fairly HIGH VOLUME ping list on some days......
There, but for the grace of C.A.R.B., go I.
I'm guessing they don't have Unions in India ??
but....but.......but......I thought Jennifer Granholm said "Michigan has the best workers on the planet"
I am an exceedingly loyal Ford customer. If they shut down a bunch of plants here and start outsourcing all of the jobs to other countries, however, I'll have to reluctantly stop buying Fords.
The point is diesel is always cheaper EXCEPT in the USA where it's price is out of wack compared to gasoline. My untutored guess is that diesel is easier to make from crude and it definitely comes out of sour (heavy) crude easier than gasoline.
So get that crude beastly smelly product known as diesel and use modern technology to burn it in hi tech diesel engines. With less pollution, soot and smell that we all remember. It can be done. Ideal solution is coal liquefaction into diesel which also produces heating oil and jet fuel. That's three very useful products
Micigan does have the best workers. they just ain't the cheapest.
This looks like these engines are destined for the India market and not the US market. I don't think they can sell Diesel Fiesta's in the US because of EPA rules.
If this is for the India market then why not make more profit by building localy!
Ford manufacturs diesels for the Asian market. What's so surprising about that? Look at the new 2007 Ford Ranger that's marketed for the Asian market and not in the USA.
True, I just wish that Ford would have made the announcement before the election. Michigan needs new leadership big time.
Friggin unions are killing America. Outlaw any and all unions and at least 1 scourge on communism will be erased from America.
It's not Ford per se, it's the unions. Ford has no choice if it wants to stay in business.
Thank you UAW for forcing jobs to go to India.
A 1.4 diesel - talk about anemic. Can you say "no market in the U.S."
Plus, the last time I saw a Fiesta in the U.S. must have been 5 years ago at best.
Yeah, who needs that whole "freedom of association" when there's money to be made?
Makes sense, since they're to be sold in their vehicles produced in India for the Indian market.
"I'm guessing they don't have Unions in India ??"
Maybe they have better management too.
