CA: Assembly GOP moves against governor
Inside Bay Area ^ | Nov. 13, 2006 | Steven Harmon

Conservative Republican Assembly legislators signaled they are prepared to make life difficult for Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger by installing a combative conservative as their leader, a move experts said might backfire and actually marginalize the GOP caucus.

Republicans are the minority party — they hold only 32 of the 80 seats in the Assembly — and generally are only able to influence legislation — on taxes and budgets — when a two-thirds vote is needed.

Now we know why they only hold 32/80 seats -- they refuse to understand that in a very liberal state like CA, they either appeal to a broader spectrum of moderates, or keep shrinking into a smaller and smaller minority. They seem to be more focused on fighting Arnold, than the Democrats.

They are their own worst enemy.

So you think the voters in their actual districts don't matter at all? It would be better if they work to impress voters in other disctricts, and anger the voters in their disctricts, so they don't get elected, things would be much better.

Normally I say stand firm in what you believe in, but at the same time you should be smart about it. In a state that's about as liberal as France, they need to look at the political reality!

Er, and what exactly did RINO Arnold do to help Republicans gain seats in the assembly????

Isn't it a 2 way street?

ANd btw, how many self-identified liberals/conservative/moderates voted in CA, and how many of them voted for the liberal Democrats?

The GOP permanently damaged itself in California by opposing Propositions 86 and 87 in the last election. By opposing these two initiatives, they damaged their appeal among moderates and liberals, in a very liberal state like California.

The political reality is that the low number of GOP reps is partly due to gerry mandering and the best way to get out of that rut is to be combative and show guts.

See, eg, how the Democrats behaved in the Congress past sessions. Very partisan!! Did it hurt them in 2006?

I'm glad the CAGOP Assembly minority is CONSERVATIVE. Yes, we'll oppose Arnold's liberal borrowing and spending plans. Get used to it.

YOu are wrong about that. Both of those propositions were defeated. Even liberals in CA don't like taxes.

The reason Republicans have continued to shrink in CA and the north is they quit making the case for conservatism. Republicans can never be a better Democrat than Democrats. Arnold won and he will receive support where it is deserving but the GOP should not rubber stamp any of his liberal compromises. CA will swing back eventually. It just takes time and pain. Let the state go bankrupt funding useless stem cell research. They deserve it.

I left California in 2000 when it was plain from the demographics that it would be a Democrat controlled state for the rest of my natural life. The illegal aliens and their progeny will vote Democrat. The productive people shouldering the majority of the tax burden will relocate to places where their vote still counts.

...marginalize the GOP caucus

Uhhh...what???

Wouldn't that be sort of like "marginalizing" the Columbia University football team?

Really ... the NO VOTE for 87 was 55%!!!

If you try to appeal to everybody you end up appealing to nobody.

Try this one on for size. Gay marraiage bans passed in 7 out of 8 states, failed very narrowly in AZ (due to ballot lanugage issues). English as an official language in Arizona ... passed 74%. Does the party that opposes that suffer permanent damage?

LOL>........and when exactly has that EVER stopped "real, true" conservatives from cutting off their nose to spite their own faces?

California is by no means a very liberal state. It is liberal on social and environmental issues, but is conservative on just about everything else. This is shown time and time again through the results of initiatives.

...but the social conservatism is a real killer. Many otherwise conservative voters will vote for liberal Rats because of this.

If conservatism was marginalized, the voters didn't indicate it last week.

CA is socially liberal (witness abortion prop on parental notification; yes 46%, no 54%)... but would respond to Goldwater-style low taxes, small Government conservatism. I am sure even the San Fran liberals get sick of high taxes and wasted spending.

The problem with Arnold is that he *runs* as that kind of social liberal/fiscal conservative ... but he is governing as a big spender... That is a very great pity, because if he ruled like Reagan, he could build a political movement like him.

It's interesting that it is the exact opposite in other states... America is a great and diverse nation!

I take the opposite viewpoint!! GO GOP! Prove yourself. Arnold is NOT a Republican.
