President Bush may have won at least something in last week's election. A Democratic Congress could lean more closely toward his ideas on dealing with illegal immigration. But before the two now try to look bipartisan and pass something quickly, they should scrutinize the tea leaves in the ballot results. Mr. Bush was a bit hasty just two days after the election in pledging to Mexico's visiting president-elect, Felipe Calderón, that he'll work harder for his "comprehensive" solution on illegal immigration. The election signals on this issue were mixed.
In many races, illegal migration was a major topic for both parties, and not always a winner. In Pennsylvania, two Democratic challengers won after accusing GOP incumbents of being soft on illegal immigration. A few Republicans who appeared to be not just against illegal migration but anti- immigrant lost seats. One TV ad for losing GOP incumbent Randy Graf in Arizona rattled off crime statistics and criticized an "open door" border policy as it showed a blond child walking toward a door slowly opening.
But also in Mr. Graf's Arizona, the state hit hardest by the rise in illegal migrants, four ballot initiatives that would restrict education and various state services for illegals, and also make English the official state language, won by a nearly 3 to 1 margin.
Those votes aren't anti-legal immigrant or anti-Mexican. They send a message to all elected officials about the dangers of massive illegal migration and the slow pace of assimilation for the illegals who manage to stay in the US.

We are going hold the Republicans personally responsible if Bush pushes the shamnesty bill through with "Stretch" Pelosi.
Count on him doing just that. Bush squandered all the political capital of 2004 on trying to ram his amnesty-for-illegals through. Now that he's got a sympathetic audience in the Dhimmicrats, it's a sure bet he'll go for broke now.
You think Bush or his cadre of RINOs give a crap what you think? I've got an amnesty-for-illegals, a socialist prescription drug plan and Harriet Miers nomination that says otherwise!
Haven't we freepers learned anything yet??? If corporate America wants something bad enought they will get both parties to pass it. NAFTA had only 35 percent support, yet Clinton was able to twist enough Dem arms to give a majority GOP Congress the winning votes to pass the treaty. The same with CAFTA. Many GOP reps in the rural mill districts of the south and midwest had their arms twisted by GWB to pass CAFTA (despite opposition in the district). Many of these reps were thrown out on election day. Corporate lobbying power will be tested as a Free Trade Agreement with Vietnam is put forth for Congress. Let us see how Pelosi (rep CA) whose state has many trade interests in Asia will deal with the newly elected Dems from former GOP mill town rural districts to get the votes to pass the treaty. I think the treaty will pass by a very narrow margin (all GOP and a sliver of Dems). Result will be more Reagan Dems and GOP will stay home on election day in 2008.

Hopefully, we've just about heard the last of Rove and we'll have no future Presidents named Bush.
These aren't treaties (though they should be). If they were treaties then only the Senate would be voting on them and they would need a 2/3 margin to pass. These trade agreements are sneaky ways of getting around the treaty clause of the constitution. (Its usually easier to pass something by majority in both houses than to get 2/3 in one).

It's really too bad we don't have the power of forcing a public referendum on our dearly elected ones. They really don't care too much what we think.
Look, read your history, revolutions are not fought on empty stomaches. One of my friends told one of my distraught Reagan Democrats, if the Dems gain power, the gay agenda will be advanced. My Reagan Democrat friend replied that the gays are far away in San Francisco, the textile plant being closed by CAFTA is in his hometown and his wife will be laid off. Why can't some GOP be smart and give a little to the blue collar workers, so they will remain in power. Before unabashed free trade and globalism, the US corporations were not starving.

Which is exactly why Republicans must unite immediately, despite Bush, to stop the OBL agenda and we need folks like Tancredo, Paul, Poe, etc. to take the lead on this.
No need. If all the illegals currently in the United States get amnesty and full voting rights, the Republicans are finished and will probably never win another election.
