Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), in line to become Speaker in January, is throwing her support to Rep. John Murtha (D-Pa.) in the race for Majority Leader, a move that will be an early test of her influence and will weigh heavily on Murtha's contest with Rep. Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) for the post.
Pelosi, in a letter distributed Sunday to newly elected House Democrats, wrote that Murtha's outspoken opposition to the war in Iraq helped change the electoral campaign for the House this fall. Murtha began calling for a U.S. pullout from Iraq a year ago, and his open opposition to the war made him a focus of intense criticism from Republicans and the White House.
Pelosi, though, credited Murtha, one of her closest allies in the House, with changing the national debate on the issue and helping provide Democratic challengers and incumbents with a winning argument for the mid-term elections.
"With respect to Iraq in particular, I salute your courageous leadership that changed the national debate and helped make Iraq the central issue of this historic election," Pelosi wrote in a personal letter to Murtha. "Your leadership gave so many Americans, including respected military leaders, the encouragement to voice their own disapproval at a failed policy that weakens our military and makes stability in that region even more difficult to achieve. The enthusiastic response of Americans all across this nation gave an enormous lift to our Democratic efforts, and your unsurpassed personal solicitations produced millions of dollars which were new to the effort. Those resources made a huge difference and particularly for the candidates on whose behalf you campaigned."
Pelosi added: "Your strong voice for national security, the war on terror and Iraq provides genuine leadership for our party, and I count on you to continue to lead on these vital issues. For this and for all you have done for Democrats in the past and especially this last year, I am pleased to support your candidacy for Majority Leader for the 110th Congress."
Putting her weight any where near Murtha could get her squished.
Maybe she should put Nadler's weight behing Murtha too.
Yes! Do it, I double dare ya, Ms. Pelosi. Please !
Having lived in Steny Hoyer's district for the last thousand years, and watching how he stole the 94 election from Larry Hogan after gerrymandering Southern Maryland and stabbed DA Bud Marshall in the back, I hope Pelosi and Murtha are successful in stabbing his linguini spine.
For God sake we need some war on terror veterans to start organizing against these defeatest kooks.
There are so many heroes that could not be ignored if they only had voice loud enough.
Something like the Swift Boat Vets but contemporarys.
Some people we can throw our support behind and help them be heard. Only war on terror veterans have the experience and service behind them to elevate them in the eyes of the people.
Mad Murtha must not be allowed to pull another Vietnam pullout on this nation.
How soon before Bush is impeached?
So much for the Honeymoon, eh?
What a waste.
Good. Moves like this should get the Pubbies elected in a landslide in two years.
Could be a bad move on Pelosi's part, if she succeeds in getting the position for Murtha. The American people might think she's getting "in your face" to our troops, not just to the Repubs.
Despite his Iraq stance, Murtha is pro-life and pro-gun. I wonder what the moonbats think of that?
Back to my tin foil hat mind - I keep thinking our troops will be pulled out, come back pissed off and well trained and that with a DIM congress out of control - things will get real ugly. The country is so divided and sides divisive.
Don't you just know how she cackles when she is alone, "If they liked the history made when I became Speaker of the House, just wait until they are saying, Madam President..he..he..he..he!"...and the cauldron is stirred....
Not anymore if he's majority leader. They have a way of changing their stripes over there.
Why do so many here care who they make majority leader? With just a few exceptions, one Democrat is as bad as another. The inmates are clearly running the asylum in their party, so it essentially makes zero difference whether they're led by Jack Murtha or Charlie Rangel or Barbara Lee or Barney Frank.
This is priceless! LOL Do it, Nancy, do it! Prove once and for all to ALL Americans how sick and twisted you people are. After they start feeding America to the terrorists, and march onward to their goal of socialism and moral degradation, maybe the rest of our fellow Americans will finally get their heads out of the sand, or their arse, and realize what the party of Democrats has in mind for their future.
Some folks just can't help themselves. They have to play with fire and get burned before they realize how dangerous that can be. I thought Republicans were smarter than that, but I learned a valuable lesson this past week. We've got R's playing with fire too.
Wow, and I thought Hoyer was one of the saner dhimmis' in the House.
Never forget the 2008 strategy to get Hillary elected. All thoughts of war and terrorism (i.e. Hillary as Commander-In-Chief) must be erased from the minds of the people. Its the 1990's all over again. 9/11, what's 9/11?
If only he were pro-western nations and pro-American!!! Sheeesh!!!
