On election eve when much of the country was transfixed by the nation's political races, a hastily assembled panel of school board candidates sat uneasily on stage at the Laguna Beach Women's Club.
Facing them was an audience of parents looking for answers. Not answers about academic standards, curriculum or school funding, but answers on where candidates stood on something far more divisive: MTV.
~snip~
The politics of "Laguna Beach" and residents' race to condemn and distance themselves from the series, which is filmed off campus, reflects the depth of resentment the series has engendered here. At the same time, its defenders say, the series is being blamed for anything and everything that goes wrong even the city's ongoing transformation from bohemian art colony to enclave of the fabulously rich.
The show, which premiered two years ago, follows a clique of attractive teenagers as they navigate a minefield of romance and serial "hookups" while engaging in bitter, often banal feuds. And it's all shot against a backdrop of sweeping ocean vistas, plunging cliffs and shimmering sunsets in one of the nation's most beautiful cities.

This show was on in my nail salon yesterday as I was getting a pedicure. I couldn't believe it. But it still wasn't as bad as the next show that came up on MTV, THE REAL WORLD: DENVER. The other lady in the salon just looked at me and shook her head. We were just speechless as to the overt sexuality on this show.
Are taking sides based on a TV show?
25 years ago, MTV was music videos, now it's just teen sex shows.
The parents don't like the truth about their own kids being exposed.
BINGO! We have a winner. The reason for the "resentment".
I've watched the it, because the family I work with watches it (they are young). The ultra-rich parents can't be too pleased to see their failings on parade for all the world to see.
MAD TV did a spoof of the show-One of the funniest things I've seen in long time.
It's beyond disgusting. The only bright spot in the whole hour I was there was the black Republican Conservative in the REAL WORLD house. His mission is to tell everyone that homosexuality is not natural and to explain why gay marriage is unacceptable. I kid you not. Good lookin kid, articulate. They'll eat him up.
So, do they get to vote him off like on the other reality shows?
No, they don't...they'll just fight alot. He seemd very smart, maybe he'll show them up for the fools they are. There's a gay guy and a guy who says he's bisexual.
I would not use LA TIMES or a MTV show to tell truth about if grass is still green. These are not good sources for facts let alone truth.
Are any of the girls lesbians, or just sluts with tattoos on their lower backs above the visible thong underwear?
PSS...they're not really lesbians, although they play them on TV!
LMAO!
I don't know about the sex but the idea of a "bohemian art colony" scares the $hit out of me.
Does MTV play music videos anymore? How about "VJ's"?? It really scares me to think a network with a show title "True Life: Im a Heroin Addict" not only shows how to use the illegal drug but shows how to break the law to get it and how to work the system to get more drugs to "get off it".
It's called a tramp stamp and makes a great bullseye.
And HBO used to show movies and had no commercials.
