Start U.S. Iraq withdrawal in 4-6 months: Democrats

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Democrats, who won majorities in the U.S. Congress in last week's elections, said on Sunday they will push for a phased withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq to begin in four to six months.

"The first order of business is to change the direction of Iraq policy," said Sen. Carl Levin (news, bio, voting record), a Michigan Democrat who is expected to be chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee in the new Congress.

Levin, on ABC's "This Week," said he hoped some Republicans would emerge to join Democrats and press the administration of President George W. Bush to tell the Iraqi government that U.S. presence was "not open-ended."

Bush has insisted that U.S. troops would not leave Iraq until the Iraqis were able to take over security for their country.

"We need to begin a phased redeployment of forces from Iraq in four to six months," Levin said.

Speaking on the same program, Sen. Joseph Biden (news, bio, voting record), a Delaware Democrat who is expected to head the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said he supported Levin's proposal for a withdrawal.

Since when do Senators run foreighn policy....especially senators with a 49-49-2 slim majority.

And especially when one of those 2 independent votes is in favor of the war and won re-election against the moonbats over such.

The Dems didn't just fail to take out Lieberman, they made him into the key swing vote in the Senate. Talk about unintended consequences.

Well then how the hell come none of these rats have said anything about the troops in Bosnia that clinton PROMISED to have out by the end of 1996.

That is old news .. most americans don't remember that or they don't pay attention and listen to whatever others tell them

They have the power of the purse strings. And everyone knows it. They could try to cut off funding if they were serious about pulling out. Let's see if they have the stomach to put our money where their mouths are.

Start U.S. Iraq withdrawal in 4-6 months: Democrats

You would think that the recent "Woo Hoo's" from the Islamofacists over the Rat wins taken in the context of the even more recent statements that the Islamofacists would not rest until they "blow up the White House" would give some of the cut and runners enough of a clue.

If we cut and run on an announced time table, expecially one so short, chaos will erupt (Saigon???), and these animals will again be free to pursue hitting us in the homeland. Iraq will resume being a free terror training camp without any outside restraint. Terrorists will be able to hit us HERE again.

The only way out of this is to fight and win.

Look what you have done America -- you voted these moron Marixists into power and we will have another Viet Nam. Cut and run and leave the spoils to the enemy...

My heart goes out to the innocent people in Iraq just like Nam who will suffer greatly at the hands of our enemies.
This enemy will not stop there we will have more attacks here.

"It didn't have to happen this way"

No, it didn't. Republicans, recognizing that power can change, could have actually prosecuted the war in Iraq more aggressively and with a focus on unambiguous victory, rather than insert political issues and nation-building as the paramount driving force.

The Dems are attempting to do what the people have said they want with their votes last week.

We don't have to like it, but it appears it will happen, doesn't it?

They'll do some polling this week and see how the public takes this news.

Then, if they don't like the results, they'll offer a different direction.

Seems to me that to the degree "W" kowtows to the Dems he is joining them in encouraging the genocide sure to follow in Iraq.

Frankly I thought the "Bushies" gave that sort of stuff up when Prescott turned up on the losing side.

Let "THEM" lose this war and then let the consequences of their actions be seen by the American people. Once we see Iraq in the hands of the Terrorists (Islamic Fascist) then we'll see a spread of Islamic governments throughout all of the Middle East.

When the Islamic Fascist control the oil production and gas prices go to $5 dollars a gallon, the prices of goods as well as services will go through the roof, and once the threat of Terrorist attacks becomes a reality in this country once again, hopefully the Democrat party will be like the Whig Party and the Know Nothing Party-- Political Parties of the Past.

The only problem will be...we will once again have to clean up behind the impotent, weak-minded, inept Democrat Party to keep Islamic Fascist out of our backyards.

The most significant image of the Vietnam war:

Thanks for posting it. It represents what the left wants now, just as they wanted then.

Took the words right off my keyboard.
The problem I see is that the media will all of a sudden start reporting all the good things that have been going on and make it look like the rats and their "it's too difficult let's cut and run" policy is working.
There won't be any reports of Iraqi's wanting us to stay like there is now, we will hear only a few people say they want us out and how effective the training has been. Even though just a short time ago we were miserably short on the training timetable all of a sudden we succeeded in training them.
I don't put any lying cheating plan past the rats and the media.

Ok.......it sounds nice, but HOW do you do this without massive consequences for the Iraqis and for the US? How do you do this without the US looking as though it failed? And HOW can they say this is best? I bet the majority of the troops do not want to come home looking as though they didn't accomplish their mission.
