Start U.S. Iraq withdrawal in 4-6 months: Democrats

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Democrats, who won majorities in the U.S. Congress in last week's elections, said on Sunday they will push for a phased withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq to begin in four to six months.

"The first order of business is to change the direction of Iraq policy," said Sen. Carl Levin (news, bio, voting record), a Michigan Democrat who is expected to be chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee in the new Congress.

Levin, on ABC's "This Week," said he hoped some Republicans would emerge to join Democrats and press the administration of President George W. Bush to tell the Iraqi government that U.S. presence was "not open-ended."

Bush has insisted that U.S. troops would not leave Iraq until the Iraqis were able to take over security for their country.

"We need to begin a phased redeployment of forces from Iraq in four to six months," Levin said.

Speaking on the same program, Sen. Joseph Biden (news, bio, voting record), a Delaware Democrat who is expected to head the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said he supported Levin's proposal for a withdrawal.

[Not gonna happen. Lieberman votes no. So do one or two other Dems. Chaffee is gone. Probably only one Rep. will vote yes. Bush wins.] I thought more and more Republicans were abandoning the GOP so to speak? Two points though- one I beleive it was the Mexicans who came out in force to vote democrat due to the GOP stance on illegal immigration that swayed the vote for the dems- and as the previous poster pointed out there was a very slim margin of win for the dems- this may mean the GOP still has sway in congress- however, the second point is like I asked, if more Reps are having second htouhgts about the war, perhaps the dems could pull off a 'leave early' vote?

They can't cut off funding in 2007

Guess what next year is?

that budget and appropriations are in place now.

Call me skeptable of the dems .. but I'm sure they will find a way to redirect many of those funds that they can get away with

Isn't it a little embarrassing for an old timer to be defending al Reuters in an argument about media distortion?

Trying to get your point here, lead.....

Bush has insisted that U.S. troops would not leave Iraq until the Iraqis were able to take over security for their country.

If we can send U.S. soldiers to fight in Iraq with only 6 months training, why is it taking going on 4 years to train the Iraqis???

Very true. I have two sisters whom both married Democrats and, then they themselves became one. I never talk to them and, stay away from the two.

Not much difference in the Black Plague and a Democrat, they both will kill you.

I see you are helping fight the good fight, here on FR...

BTW...I just heard on Fox News that Feingold has decided NOT to run for POTUS in 2008...ostensibly because he now will have POWER in the Senate...

however, I have a feeling it is more about Hillary already having the nomination sewed up.

Also...is HILLARY going along with the Biden/Levin cut and run plan???

I think she will...because I heard her give a speech a few weeks ago and she said that the troops should start coming home by the END OF THIS YEAR!!!

I think all the dems are interested in..is getting this war "out of the way"...so they can blame the whole thing on Bush...and the Hillary won't have to "worry about it"...HA.HA...just like Bill did...he didn't WORRY ABOUT IT!!

I'm not defending Reuters. I'm trying to get you to tell me where the article is wrong. You're the one who said not to buy it.

Ask of any Democrats you know if they are a proud Naked Communist or a Closeted Marxist who won't readily admit his or her own political proclivities. They may not answer but it'll eat at them.

I did answer your question.
They distort the news to fit an agenda. Lies of omission are the same as outright lies.
If I showed you a picture of a car that was all torn apart and told you it was too damaged to run that would be true. But if I didn't show that it is being rebuilt and all the new parts were sitting just out of camera range that would be a lie of omission.
Apparently you believe what they say without looking further.

Good, all you had to say is that you couldn't find anything wrong with the Reuters article as written.
