There have been a lot of warm and fuzzy self-congratulations since Tuesday's election about how California voters and candidates -- particularly Arnold Schwarzenegger -- have met in the middle of the political spectrum.
The cheery theory is that when the guv and the plucky guys and gals who make up the Legislature return to the front lines in January, they'll all sip cocoa together and make toasts to the wonders of "centrism" and lead the state to new heights.
This theory seems to be based on three things: 1. Schwarzenegger was easily re-elected as governor, even though he's a Reep in a Demo state in a Demo year. 2. He and the Demo-dominated Legislature got some stuff done this year through "bipartisan" cooperation. 3. The aforementioned teamed up to persuade voters to approve a bunch of bonds.
But before we all join hands and sing 10 or 12 verses of "Kumbaya," let's peer a little harder at reality.
Schwarzenegger won big, and he's a Reep. Whoop-de-do. Six of the last 10 California governors have been Republican. ...
Plus, let's face it, Skippy the Wonder Possum could have whupped Phil Angelides.
It's true that through "bipartisan cooperation," the Legislature and governor enacted bills that raise the minimum wage, aim to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and make some prescription drugs cheaper for Californians without medical insurance.
That is if you define "bipartisan cooperation" as the governor cutting deals with Democratic lawmakers. And if you ignore the fact that of the 138 Republican legislative votes that could have been cast for those three bills, exactly six were.
Instead of a true centrist "bipartisan" core, what we had was a governor willing to bend to get re-elected, and a majority of Democrats willing to help him to further their own agendas. ...

Skippy the Wonder Possum was unavailable for comment at this time. He's planning a run for the Senate as a middle of the road candidate.
..it remains to be seen whether the 2007 Schwarzenegger is going to be the 2006 "let's make a deal" version, or the 2005 "in your face, Legislature" version, or the 2004 "let's think outside the box" version. He says it will be 2006 revisited. Of course, he also said he wouldn't take special-interest contributions.

in the recent election, moderates were 'roadkill',, and deservedly so..
Centrist or Moderate Republican means one who will embrace a liberal agenda, while still leaving an (R) beside his name.

Harhar.
So while the GOP is busy purging itself of moderates, the Democrats have just retaken Congress with the help of a number of anti-abortion anti-gun control an-illegal immigration candidates. They went from leftist purity and minority status to a more mixed caucus (but solidly controlled by hardcore leftists like Pelosi).
The GOP is being virtually wiped off the map in the Northeast and New England. Once Judd Gregg, Olympia Snow and Collins retires - those seats may well be gone for a generation.

Looks like Skippy's out of the running:
However, he still plans on voting next election.
I think centrist or "moderate" is just left wing code for the ratchet effect.
When republicans lose it is a final repudiation of conservatism, or conservatism is dead. When republicans elect a RINO it is a evolution of enlightenment of moderation in the republicans to the left wing view.
When democrats lose in contrast, it is a minor setback. It is only a temporary maintaining of the status quo until such time as they can push further left. There is also the opposit when a DINO is elected. DINOs are only a temporary alliance with a conservative traitor who can be disposed immediatly upon a majority.
All the dinos who were just elected will not be put in any place they could become a problem.
But apparently not Steve Westly, go figure.

Well stated, but don't expect them to pay attention, they are too busy celebrating our new ultra-exclusive teeny-tiny tent and handing Congress over to the hard left. It's a huge win for them in their ultra-exclusive minds ...
Deceit, liberal agendas, capitulation of party platforms and fraternizing with traditional adversaries will probably be the natural behavior of California, Republican, statewide office holders.
