CARACAS, Venezuela -- President Hugo Chavez welcomed Colombian pop singer Shakira to his country on Saturday and said he may go undercover to watch the hip-shaking superstar perform.

"Shakira's arrived. ... Welcome, Shakira," Chavez said during a televised speech.

Chavez said that the other day he'd put on a wig and not even his bodyguards had been able to recognize him. "Maybe I'll put on a wig and go see Shakira," he quipped.

The reason he has to hide is that the crowd would beat him senseless if he showed up at a Shakira concert. As for Shakira, don't count on her being pleased at getting welcomed by the Venezuelan Thug. She's a Colombian and all non-FARC Colombians hate Chavez's guts.

I would cross Shakira off my list, but she was never on it, and was not likely to get on it.

Who cares about her political philosophy? She could read Das Kapital to me just so long as she wiggled her hips while doing so.

Collected from various Web sites:

Shakira's Anti-War Campaign
11 February 2003

During her current tour, Shakira has included the use of giant projector screens, at times depicting puppet caricatures of President Bush and Saddam Hussein playing chess.

By comparing war to a game of chess, Shakira said she's expressing her opinion that the confrontation between America and Iraq is about two people trying to win a game.

She says : "I just feel that there are always pacifist solutions, and I think that the leaders know the exit to the conflict, it's just that sometimes they don't want to use them," she said. "They just want to continue playing their little game of power. And I feel that us people have the responsibility and also the obligation to demand to our leaders to give us the pacifist solutions. To give us a world in peace."

During a press conference in Athens, Greece, Shakira made the following statement, which has since been added to her official web site: "I want to speak as a young person in the name of my generation because I am sure that my generation agrees with me on this: war is not the solution to any conflict. Not today, not in this century.

Its urgent that there is an international diplomatic intervention and an immediate cease of fire. I am sad, I guess like the rest of the world is, to know that because of this conflict so many innocent mothers and children are dying. I just want a call from my generation to the US leaders and the super power countries' leaders to stop this war because we all know they can stop it. I just hope that there is an international diplomatic intervention right away.

We want something better for our kids; the kids in Colombia, the kids in Israel, the kids of Palestine, the kids of the world, because I believe in only one human race. .. We don't need leaders that create more divisions and resentment and more hatred. We need leaders that care about the people and about the social needs of a nation, not leaders that only invest on weapons and space missions.

I think we need to start worrying about what we have here on this planet, which is really tough, it is tough to survive in the world we are in, with so many natural catastrophies like the tsunami that just happened in Asia and on top of that, we are killing each other. This is something I don't understand. There is alot that we need to start doing in order to survive as a community and as one human race."

Shakira has said Madonna was "spineless" when she axed her controversial video to 'American Life'. As previously reported the original video for Madonna's latest single feature pictures of the suffering recent wars have caused. Needless to say reports of the video caused controversy in the US, especially as the attack on Iraq began, and Madonna eventually reedited the video - while she still appears in military dress she sings in front of various flags. Claiming she was pro-peace but not anti-America Madonna said she allowed the re-edit because it would be insensitive to go ahead when American troops were fighting in the Middle East.

But the vehemently anti-war Shakira told reporters this weekend: "I'd expect a little more backbone from Madonna. Good pop music is always political in times of crisis." Shakira herself has included anti-war visuals in her live shows.

Has she told the farc terrorists in her own country to throw down their arms? I don't think so.

I've seen her videos, she is talented and popular. The jihadis would gang rape her for a week and behead her for enticing them. She doesn't have a clue that evil stalks the world and only hard men doing hard things allow her to live in luxury and protect her God given right to say stupid sh!t.

Very well said. So true. All I can add to that is that I'm always amazed at the childish naivete of these actors and musical entertainers. They must live in their own little world with no idea at all of the danger and the hatred aimed at us by the Islamofascists. It's the bravery of our military that, as you say, allows them to live in their plastic bubbles and have their stupid, naive beliefs and to say such stupid things. Shakira would be a prime target of the muzzies, wouldnt she? It's almost unnecessary to mention how they feel about immodestly dressed women.

I am not a fan of Shakira so I didn't go to her concert. A friend of mine just called me to say that the whole audience there began to scream "ATREVETE" (BE DARING), which is the moto the followers of Rosales (Chavez's opposition candidate)use. If Chávez was there under disguise, he must be about to have a heart attack.

I want Shakira to go to Iran. Now that would be really, really anti-American and anti-Bush. Maybe Chavez could write her a letter of recommendation.

Shakira is pretty bright. She will make whatever political statement you want if that will keep your thugs from beating up her fans at concerts or trashing stores that sell her music.

Otherwise she has heavy investments in the United States.

Ray Charles undoubtedly had Shakira in mind for more than a few of his songs.

She's also engaged to the son of the former president of Argentina, IIRC.

I'm a HUGE fan of Shakira. Trust me, she's not a communist. She is probably more liberal, but she is conservative on some issues. She is religious (Roman Catholic) and she's against abortion (she even has a song condemning abortion).

Colombia's president Alvaro Uribe (who just got reelected by a wide margin) is conservative and an ally of the United States. As far as I know, Shakira supports him and has visited with him.
