By the way, he doesn't appear on any list of Marine Corps Helicopter pilots KIA in Viet Nam.
I just watched TTU let go of ANOTHER lead and lose to OU before I logged in....thanks so much for pinging me on something that matters so much more.
Yeah, and four tours. He says his last tour was 14 months, because "that's when I got captured." All the POWs were released at the same time, in Feb/March of 1973. That means he's saying he was captured in 1972, which isn't likely...
The name might be a coincidence, but I don't think this guy was ever a POW, and if he lied about that, he probably lied about other things as well.
There is no Marine called Bill McCoy on the wall either.
Yep. WestTexasWend pointed that out at post #25.
I salute you Sir. You are a true hero. And only of people like you Sir, that made America great.
What an amazing story. All those weenies who complained about the horrifying tactic of putting panties on the head of terrorists at Abu Ghraib need to listen to this man! In fact, I think he, and all the men who were TRULY tortured by the North Vietnamese, need to be called as material witnesses if Rummy is ever put on trial for ordering 'torture' at Abu Ghraib!!
One more thing, this is Medal Of Honor/Navy Cross stuff.
Bull.
There were four POW/MIAs named Lee. None was a Marine. None was a helicopter pilot. (Three were jet fighter/bomber crewmen, one was a Navy petty officer lost overboard). None returned alive.
Someone has already posted the POWNETWORK.ORG listing. Here is the official page from the DOD.

I am sorry for Mr Lee and for the people who were taken in by him, but whatever he has or has not done in his life, he was never a prisoner, missing, or out of US contact in Southeast Asia, or he would be on the PMSEA list. In thirty years, the list has never been corrected, except as remains are recovered, and as deserters return to face the music.
It gives me scant pleasure to bust a phony on Veterans' Day. But the Japanese used to say, "Dusty is heavier than a mountain."

IT, please see my Post #50.
Chuck and Mary's list is absolutely trustworthy, but this link is official and is all you need to put the definitive kibosh on this story.
So that makes -- the Mayor of Atlantic City, this apparently non-political guy, and a Congressman from Mass. (Delahunt, CD-10) outed this election season. Naturally Delahunt went on to win running away....
I bet I could talk to Mr Lee for ten minutes and have an accurate picture of his helicopter piloting achievements. Hunch says, nil.

If you mean "Killer" McCoy, his given name is Kenneth. And the pen name the author uses is "W.E.B. GriffiN." (W.E.B. are his real initials and he lives in Alabama, IIRC). So while the McCoy in this story is probably not real, it isn't likely that Mr Lee is just adapting the character from the novels.

Thanks for the DoD link. I think it's pretty clear he was never a POW.
Kudos to everyone who contributed to verifying that this man's story is bogus. (Actually, when reading it, it seemed a little too-too to be believable.)
Check this thread again, this is most likely a liar, the story has too many appearances of outright lies.
Check this thread again, the guy in the story is most likely a phony
POSER ping!

I was talking about Killer's younger brother who appears in the novels as well.
I just went to the site and they have not exposed the guy as a fraud yet.
