Democrats to 'revisit' law creating border fence By Shaun Waterman UNITED PRESS INTERNATIONAL November 11, 2006 Democrats will look again at the legislation mandating 698 miles of fencing along the U.S.-Mexico border and might seek to scrap the plan altogether when they take control of Congress next year. Rep. Bennie Thompson, Mississippi Democrat, told reporters this week that he expected to "revisit" the issue when he becomes chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee in the 110th Congress. Mr. Thompson said the Department of Homeland Security's (DHS) new border enforcement program, known as the Secure Border Initiative or SBI Net -- which includes monitors, cameras and other integrated surveillance systems -- is a viable alternative to fencing. "We might do away with it, or look at [integrating it into] SBI Net," he said. "A virtual fence rather than a real one."

Honey, I showed up and I voted straight Republican. Haven't missed an election. Bush signed meaningless legislation for a fence, so what? I am frustrated with the last 6 years of "bipartisan" (definition: wussy) action from our party when they had control. I am not anti-Bush. I am certainly not pro-Pelosi. She's a socialist to the core, as is a good portion of that party.

Not everyone who disagrees with the way our party has conducted itself would vote democrat. You couldn't pay me enough...but I wanted to see our party act like it had the "mandate" we gave them. Instead they tried to be so "bipartisan" that they shot themselves (us) in the foot. Now that the rats have control, they are not even trying to be bipartisan, they are just working towards their agenda. THAT'S what our reps should have done.

I hope all of the republicans who stayed home because of the border issue are happy now.

Don't shoot the messengers. The GOP is reaping what it sowed.

There is no doubt that Bush has been pushing for a guest worker program for years and it should come as no surprise. It was part of his 2000 campaign. What boggles my mind is that he is bucking his own party undermining its position in the process. He is also bucking American public opinion.

He is blowing my mind also.

BTW, I looked at your posts--wondering why you are going after me like a mad dog, when there are plenty of people on this board who are in agreement with me. Well, I'm glad to know I'm not alone. You're after everyone! Apparantly everyone else is a moron, compared to you. Congratulations to you, dearie!

Last-minute bill changes funding for border fence

Washington Post ^ | Oct 6, 2006 | Spencer S. Hsu

WASHINGTON - No sooner did Congress authorize construction of a 700-mile fence on the U.S.-Mexico border last week than lawmakers rushed to approve separate legislation that ensures it will never be built, at least not as advertised, according to Republican lawmakers and immigration experts.

GOP leaders have singled out the fence as one of the primary accomplishments of the recently completed session. Many lawmakers plan to highlight their $1.2 billion down payment on its construction as they campaign in the weeks before the midterm elections. But shortly before recessing late Friday, the House and Senate gave the Bush administration leeway to distribute the money to a combination of projects -- not just the physical barrier along the southern border. The funds may also be spent on roads, technology and "tactical infrastructure" to support the Homeland Security Department's preferred option of a "virtual fence."

What's more, in a late-night concession to win over wavering Republicans, GOP congressional leaders pledged in writing that American Indian tribes, members of Congress, governors and local leaders would get a say in "the exact placement" of any structure, and that Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff would have the flexibility to use alternatives "when fencing is ineffective or impractical."

The loopholes leave the Bush administration with authority to decide where, when and how long a fence will be built, except for small stretches east of San Diego and in western Arizona. Homeland Security officials have proposed a fence half as long, lawmakers said.

This case reflects political calculations by GOP strategists that voters do not mind the details, and that key players -- including the administration, local leaders and the Mexican government -- oppose a fence-only approach, analysts said.

Tony, you owe us here at FR who have always been your supporters and well wishers in those darker times an explanation and clarification.

A year ago, I called out Tony Snow as a shill for the White House and took a lot of heat for it. Nothing I have seen in the past year - including Wednesdays comments - has led me to change my opinion of him.

OK, I'm ALL Right! If the Washington Compost snippet that you posted in your reply #150 was true, why would the democrats want to revisit that piece of legislation to defund it.

I understand how you can be led by the nose by the mainstream media, and this is your first and only warning about making a fool of yourself, don't let it happen again.

Maybe we should go along with a Bush impeachment. Maybe Cheney will get the hint, but of course the Moonbats won't stop at Bush.
