Iraqi terrorists 'are being supplied with arms smuggled from Iran'

Iran is sustaining the insurgency against British and American forces in Iraq by supplying terrorists with weapons and cash, senior military figures have claimed.

Members of the 1st Queen’s Dragoon Guards on a ‘rural patrol’ in Teeb Valley, Maysan Province British forces are enduring daily bombardments of mortar bombs and rockets at their bases in Basra. The weapons are believed to be sponsored, funded and smuggled from Iran whose border is just over 10 miles from the southern Iraq capital.

Military sources have disclosed that there is "very, very strong intelligence" that elements inside Iran have continued to fund and support the gun-running. There is still no "concrete evidence", in part, it is claimed, because Iranian weapons are designed to be untraceable.

The same script as in the '70s. Iran plays the part of N. Korea. Bush plays the part of Nixon, Cheney will be Ford. Kerry plays Kerry. Who will play Carter?

The only way out is for Bush to stand firm (unlike Nixon) and assert "Executive Privilege" when the subpoenas start. Bush has to be willing to be impeached (along with his entire administration if need be), rather than cooperate with the emasculation of the Presidency. If the Bush administration is removed and replaced by the Democrats, they won't be able to blame Bush in '08. Otherwise, Bush's "guilt" will be front page news for the next 2 years.

Normally, the Telegraph is a good read but this article is as newsworthy as "Coolidge will not run in 1928" and "the sun rose in the east today." Iran supplying arms to the Shiites? Say it isn't SO, Nancy.

I've wondered, after the example of Vietnam, how we could sit in Iraq and openly acknowledge that both Iran and Syria were inflitrating the borders with weapons that are killing American soldiers, and basically, say "thats life".

An aggressive postiure against both Iran and Syria on their borders may have prevented many US (and Iraqi) deaths.

To allow it to continue, unchallanged, after we have proven that a substantial portion of the IEDs and other weapons are coming in from Iran, without aggressive action to stop it......I'm dumbfounded. Vietnam/Laos sancutuary all over again.

That is the play, IMO. How much official coddling to Iran will remain to be seen. I foresee a breakthough in negations with Iran.

Fairly obvious really but at the same time it speaks volumes about the strategic savvy of those running this show, that such an occurence wasn't anticipated from the outset.
