McCain to launch 2008 exploratory panel

Sen. John McCain (news, bio, voting record), considered the front-runner for the 2008 Republican presidential nomination, intends to launch an exploratory committee next week, GOP officials said Friday.

The officials spoke on the condition of anonymity to avoid pre-empting a public statement from the four-term Arizona senator.

McCain, the GOP maverick who unsuccessfully sought his party's nomination in 2000, already has opened a bank account for the committee, one official said.

"The senator has made no decision about running for president," said Eileen McMenamin, a McCain spokeswoman.

Aides to McCain say the senator will discuss a presidential bid with his family over the Christmas holiday.

McCain is a former Navy pilot who was a prisoner of war in Vietnam. He was elected to the Senate in 1986, and served in the House for four years before that.

If McCain were to run, he would turn 72 on Aug. 29, 2008, at the height of the campaign. Only President Reagan was older — 73 at the start of his second term. McCain's health could be another issue. The senator has had several cancerous lesions removed from his skin.

It will likely be Mitt Romney. However, he will not get the Evangelical vote thus Hillary will win. We NEED a real Reagan Conservative. See my tagline...

"Call him what you want, but with his lifetime ACU rating (80%), he's not a RINO."

*****

Gang of 14.
Amnesty a.k.a. comprehensive immigration reform.
Campaign finance reform a.k.a. restrict free speech.

At least he hasn't written a book involving pedophile fellatio like Sen. Webb...recruited for the Klan like Sen. Byrd, or drowned his girlfriend like Sen. Kennedy...other than that, he doesn't have many redeeming qualities.

"RINO" was being polite.

"Whatever McCain is doing, look over his shoulder and you'll find Graham. There's another one that needs to "go" in the next primary."

I strongly agree that conservatives in South Carolina should work to identify and support a good conservative candidate to oppose Lindsey Graham in the next state primary. Although I'm not a resident of SC, I will commit now to a generous contribution to the leading Republican candidate who opposes Graham in the primary. Graham is the cabana boy for Club Dem in the U.S. Senate.

"McCain got a small taste of what the Viet Nam vets have in store for him when Bush "swiftboated" him in south Carolina."

You refer to "the Viet Nam vets."

However many of these vets you claim to speak for...a whole lot of Americans won't think much of them, if they go and disrespect a bona fide POW.

You might want to think that one through again.

I never claimed to "speak for them". I'm stating the facts.

After Ted Sampley and some others showed up in South Carolina telling their story about McCain and then Ted appeared on stage with Bush, South Carolina veterans went for Bush by a huge margin.

Ted and his guys worked with the “Swift Boat” guys and learned a lot. They will be more effective this time than they were in South Carolina.

You may not like them. There are people who didn’t like the “Swift Boat” guys (including McCain) but that doesn’t mean they aren’t effective. The Bush team already showed they are effective.

I’m sorry to break this to you. I’m not a member of their group or connected to them in any way other than watching them since 2000. I’m just telling you what’s coming.

Nope. Not me. And years ago I was one of your biggest fans, Senator.

But not since you went off the deep end after you lost the presidential nomination. No-sir-ee. You've become too wacky, too unpredictable and too chummy with the senatrix.

You'd do well to just ride on home on your horse and quietly put yourself into retirement. You're overdone.

You need to get over your McCainophobia. What the GOP needs now is a maverick, an anti-establishment candidate that can distance himself from Bush. McCain has one important qualification: HE CAN WIN THE GENERAL ELECTION.

My personal favorite is Gingrich, but I am not too delusional to think he can be elected. The guy is radioactive, perhaps undeservedly, but he is surely radioactive.

After seeing the performance of the Bush team, I am ready for a maverick.

A maverick maybe, but not someone who over and over again, betrays the principles of American republicanism.

I love how people who call themselves conservative keep pushing people who are clearly unelectable-somebody actually (seriously) mentioned Steve Forbes for President today. Keep it up guys, with malcontents like you conservatives don't need the Dummycrats.

Who else is likely to run who has a chance of winning?

Newt: Twice divorced, married his secretary, made radioactive by years of unfair media coverage.

Duncan Hunter: A great man. One of my personal favorites. But as part of the House Repubs, will he have a huge "L" on his forehead? Poor name recognition. Great public speaker. Great national security credentials. Some say he comes across poorly on TV...another Bob Dole?

Rudy Giuliani: Pro-Abortion, Pro-Gun Control, Pro-Gay Rights. He could do lasting damage to the GOP in the Solid South. No national security credentials either.

Mit Romney: Another left-leaning pol with no national security credentials. Why would the GOP nominate someone from that state? Taking a page from the Dems' losing game plan???
