Republican Rep. Mary Bono declared victory tonight in her bid for another two years in office but said she's "disheartened" by the Republicans losing control of the House.
With 73 percent of the votes counted, Bono led Democratic challenger David Roth by a 58-41 percent margin.
Acknowledging that Democrats will be the new majority party in the House, Bono pledged to bipartisan cooperation.
"I'm willing to reach across party lines," she said. "It's a new day in America. I am disheartened, but I know that when one door closes, another opens."
wasn't she a Hippo (a RINO without horns, or a RINO lite) ?
Well, good for her. She has won re-election several times. She was on TV a lot during that deadly fire in California which was in her district.
Yep. Full fledged.
Women in the GOP are usually RINOs.
Maybe, but at least she's not Cher.
I like her, too. She seems honest maybe a little misdirected but honest.
It is a fairly safe district in Riverside County.
She is not conservative, say, in the Duncan Hunter sense, but more conservative than any Democrat in California.
"I'm willing to reach across party lines,"
They all will say this of course.
You reach out to libs, you pull back a bloody stump.
Always been the way.
That won't stop freepers from bashing her. It's the thing to do, it would seem. Spout off without information.
Sonny Bono was a great politician, I remember him rallying the republicans during a dark time even though he was a freshman.
The very first time I heard him as a candidate was on talk radio, I just assumed it was some kind of joke, but that hour turned me into a huge fan.
To me he and Bruce Herscheson were the most articulate conservative politicians I've ever heard (outside of Reagan of course).
Although I had enjoyed his music career and TV show, I took a second look at his life and realized the guy was a quiet genius.
He never looked like he was much, yet he wrote chart topping songs, created Cher, his show was a smash, and the whole time he was conservative, and took a public anti drug stance, at the peak of the sixties.
Look at the lyrics that he wrote for his solo "The Revolution Kind " during the sixties.
I'm glad I'm here just like you
And if I say a thing or two
That doesn't mean I'm all that mad
Or that I think this place is bad
We got a land and the land is free
And no one loves it more than me
[Chorus:]
But a man's got a right to talk about
What's on his mind
That doesn't necessary mean
He's a revolution kind
Destruction is near we heard the moans
But I got conclusions of my own
Have I got some kid I have to teach
That if somebody makes a speech
And what he said you don't agree
Just let him scream the man is free
[Chorus]
These words all have been said before
By men who have to go to war
By men who cried and kiss their wife
By men who had to give their life
By better men than me
That's why this land we have is free
[Chorus]
Oh no
Oh no
Oh no
Oh no
His wife is a moderate, but at least she holds the seat, that was a big concern when Sonny died.
Er, why did it take so long for her to declare victory? With a 17 point lead, it should have been called earlier than 2 days after the election. Or was there some sort of problem with the ballots?
My flub. There was no date on the article. I'm sure she declared victory on election night or before. ;~)
BUMP!
I still believe that Sonny Bono was killed because he was to be among the group which "tried" billyclinton in his impeachment.
You think that Clinton moved the tree that he crashed into?
It all because of a badly-placed OSHA exit sign on the slopes.
