Immigration stance doomed GOP

ATLANTA -- Hispanics said adios to President Bush's Republican Party in Tuesday's elections, voting in much greater numbers than expected for Democratic candidates in an apparent rejection of the ruling party's efforts to blame much of the nation's problems on undocumented migrants.

Contrary to experts' predictions that Hispanics would not turn out massively on Tuesday, exit polls show that Hispanics accounted for 8 percent of the total vote. That is about equal to the Hispanic vote's record turnout in the 2004 presidential election, and much more than its turnout in previous midterm elections.

Click here to find out more! What's more, 73 percent of Hispanics voted for the Democratic Party on Tuesday, while only 26 percent voted for Republican candidates, a CNN exit poll shows. In the 2004 presidential elections, 55 percent of Hispanics voted Democrat and about 42 percent voted Republican.

Many experts had predicted that Hispanics would not turn out in big numbers, in part because most of the hottest races took place in states with no major Hispanic presence. Also, experts said that it would take until the 2008 elections for the largely Hispanic "today we march, tomorrow we vote" protests of earlier this year to translate into the naturalization and registration of large numbers of foreign-born Latino voters.

But the anti-immigration hysteria spearheaded by Republicans in the House -- and by cable-television fear mongers such as Pat Buchanan and Lou Dobbs -- irked many U.S.-born Hispanics who normally don't care much about immigration.

This is wishful MSM thinking. The immigration issue could be just as powerful an issue where Hispanics do not have much of a presence if the Republicans had made it so. It may have been the voting issue for Hispanics but it was not the issue it should have been for the majority who want to see our borders secured from immigrants, drugs, and terrorists. That is because the leader of the Republican Party and Teddy Kennedy have the same position. This made it difficult for the Republicans to nationalize the issue in a way in which it could have worked to their favor. The Democrats nationalized the Iraq issue to their favor, the Republicans nationalized no issue to their favor. The economy was another issue that they could have worked more to their favor as well. The fact that the elites in the Republicans party are globalists and in charge, mean that what big business wants, big business gets. They want the status quo. A continuing flow of cheap undocumented workers in which they do not have to any benefits to, and whose benefits are paid for by taxpayers instead of the illegal employers.

A third party ain't going to happen.

The founders set up a two party system and not a parliamentary one.

Pipe dream, I know.

What about turning the tides by using the illegals own tactic against them? Reverse tactics have been working for the dems and socialists for years.

What about "A day without a TAXPAYER", A day without conservatives", something catchy.

We all stay home. Business owners, workers, industry executives, doctors, grocery clerks, all who wish to stop illegal immigration. I know it will never happen, but it would be cool to give out a dose of their own medicine.

Yeah know, did it ever occur to you to bring these people over to our side especially since they are anti-abortion and anti-gay marriage.

Those issues don't even register on a national level. In fact, only on sites like FR and others, who may be Christian sites, are those issues even discussed. It really doesn't mantter whether they are against abortion. They continue to vote for the party that promises them more. That's the way they are. They are constantly looking for the govt. to sustain them.

The idea that they are going to become great Americans is absurd. Most of them I talk to only want to make enough money to go back home and live like a king in the cesspool they came from.

They know nothing of our history nor do they care. They don't fly little American flags from their mirrors. They do fly mexican, guatemalan, peruvian, etc flags. Doesn't that bother you?

Whoops I forgot, you automatically measure people by their surname and not what they have believe politically wise.

The overwhelming percentage are coming from one culture/region. It's not that difficult to figure out. They all come from socialist or communist countries, including mexico despite what you read, and they will carry on the tradition.

There is no evidence to suggest they are conservative.

I understand the passion for curtailing illegal immigration but I personally know too many Republicans who thought the rhetoric was too much.

Ask them about the rhetoric when ten years from now speaking spanish will be required to get a job.

"They do want to curtail illegal immigration, what they don't want is the incindiary rhetoric of the tancredo's and buchanan's, and the GOP paid the price."

If you really think the GOP losing this election had anything to do with their tough stance on illegal immigration then you have not been listening.

The GOP lost this election because a lot of the base was tired of R's claiming to be Republicans and acting like Democrats.

Even polls show at least 11 percent of the people who voted thought the Republicans were the party of big government.

Republicans have been in power long enough for the younger generation not to know anything about what the Democrats stood for. What won this election for the Democrats was the influx of young voters that only saw Republicans as the Party of Government.

The same thing that won the Republicans the House and Senate in 1994. To think otherwise is only going to hurt us in the 2008+ elections. We need to get back to true Republican values, that's what wins votes. Being Dem lite has been a disaster.

Let the Democrats think they won because people know and what what Democrats do. Two years of Dem rule will be enough to get us the Majority again. Unless we assume we lost because of something other then losing our way.

The Pubs problem was they appeared to sound more anti-Mexican than pro-security.

Bush's idea is not all that bad (flame away) and a big opportunity was lost to address some of the very dangerous aspects of uncontrolled immigration (stupid court decisions involving anchor babies, condemning mulit-culturalism/bi-lingualism etc.)

Ok genius, then explain why the vast majority of democrat gains were of "new" democrats who campaigned as GOP lite(anti-abortion, etc.etc.)

I agree that the biggest danger of unassimilated immigrants is that they are very prone totalitarian thinking.

Dane you ignorant %$#@!. Do you know who these democrats are that got elected? Let's take a look:

Joe Donnelly (D) from Indiana (From his web site):

I do not support amnesty. Border security is crucial to solving the immigration problem and is a serious national security concern. I support more border agents, increased funding for surveillance and fencing that will prevent immigrants from illegally entering our country. I also support enforcing employment law which this administration has failed to do. For too long, this Congress has talked about immigration and failed to pass comprehensive immigration reform. That’s why we need change in Washington.

Ok genius, then why will Joe Donnelly's first vote in the House will be to make Nancy Pelosi. Speaker of the House.

You guys are dreams to used car salesmen.

If Donnelly and the other Democrats vote for amnesty - they will pay in 2008. Their margins of victory were razor thin ...

Believe me, I have. I understand their position as well.

They'd rather have a spanish speaking illegal who goes to church, works and cares for his family as a neighbor than an English speaking American who refuses to work and doesn't support his children.

It's a tough call for many, whether we like it or not.

I have one better for you, if what you say is true, then why did Arizona, a heavily Hispanic state, pass some of the toughest anti-illegal immigration messures by large margins? And most, not all, of the Republicans that lost their seats in the house and Senate were RINOs.

Most, not all, of the Democrats that won seats in the House and Senate ran as conservatives. Including anti-amnesty platforms.

Actually those who voted for democrats over immigration were going to vote with demcrats ANYWAYS.

Republicans who vote for amnesty in ANY shape or form will doome their own personal future in public life.

They may be well paid but they will be forgotten as quickly as the well paid accountant to the buggy whip corporation of 1850.

" Why don't you discuss the real problem here"

Sure, Bush is going to be a huge problem with the dems being in control of congress. He's going to be in legacy building mode, and is bound to be going along with the dems on many issues. Amnesty will be one of them. I'm already outraged just knowing it will happen. The dems will be bringing in a 30 million member voting bloc which 80% or more will vote for them, and the president will be enabling and supporting the entire thing. This must be stopped! I hope there are enough pro America Senators left to at least mount a filibuster against the legislation, because if it gets passed and signed there will never again be a conservative republican majority 10-20 years from now. The nation as we know it now is literally on the line!

All Americans are lazy? No Americans go to church? Only hispanics support their families?

You probably didn't mean it that way but apparently their rhetoric has gotten to you.
