Immigration stance doomed GOP

ATLANTA -- Hispanics said adios to President Bush's Republican Party in Tuesday's elections, voting in much greater numbers than expected for Democratic candidates in an apparent rejection of the ruling party's efforts to blame much of the nation's problems on undocumented migrants.

Contrary to experts' predictions that Hispanics would not turn out massively on Tuesday, exit polls show that Hispanics accounted for 8 percent of the total vote. That is about equal to the Hispanic vote's record turnout in the 2004 presidential election, and much more than its turnout in previous midterm elections.

Click here to find out more! What's more, 73 percent of Hispanics voted for the Democratic Party on Tuesday, while only 26 percent voted for Republican candidates, a CNN exit poll shows. In the 2004 presidential elections, 55 percent of Hispanics voted Democrat and about 42 percent voted Republican.

Many experts had predicted that Hispanics would not turn out in big numbers, in part because most of the hottest races took place in states with no major Hispanic presence. Also, experts said that it would take until the 2008 elections for the largely Hispanic "today we march, tomorrow we vote" protests of earlier this year to translate into the naturalization and registration of large numbers of foreign-born Latino voters.

But the anti-immigration hysteria spearheaded by Republicans in the House -- and by cable-television fear mongers such as Pat Buchanan and Lou Dobbs -- irked many U.S.-born Hispanics who normally don't care much about immigration.

J.D. Hayworth is a Republican in a heavily Democrat district.

Uh no it isn't, GOP registration outpaces democrat registration by a 5-3 margin.

:) Thanks.

And I forgot to add... because we don't want poor Mexicans used as modern slaves. They deserve to come to the U.S. by the main entrance, legally... instead of being treated like garbage. There is no secret, many Argro conglomerates have been paying all politicians, Reps and Dems TO LOOK THE OTHER WAY... and they did exactly that for YEARS!

Well, sorry, but after 9/11 that is not possible anymore! :)

Lou Dobbs isn't a Republican and neither is Buchanan. But the GOP let others shape the debate, so they accomplished nothing and and got the blame. What did they expect?????

"Voters actually think dems are tough on border security."

Republicans KNEW it was Hispanics that out them over in 2004, and were terrified of losing that vote by taking a tough immigration stand.

Dems played BOTH SIDES, with some Dems talking tough, while ACORN and the sycophants registered illegal voters by the MILLIONS, and the leftist media never called them on it.

There are a LOT of reasons we lost, but this was a biggie. I hope the Border Nazi's are happy. Now they are going to get EXACTLY what they didn't want.

This was an issue that SHOULD have been fought in a presidential year, NOT a mid-term.

Hate to say it in this forum, but you are correct, or should I say correcto? Or perhaps I should say: Hola to amnistia! Viva la Raza! It's getting confusing out there, Freepers. Now we have the pro-Muslim RATs in charge of the DC asylum and the illegals are sure now to be citizens soon by the 10's of millions and most will be RAT voters. Is the Republic in its death throes or what?

I am apprehensive, saddened and, as a vet of the Big War and the Cold War, I cry for our once great country. I also ask myself, are our kiddies, the 60's Boomers, primarily responsible for the mess, a generation characterized by the pro-commie machinations of the liberal MSM and presidential disasters like Carter and Clinton and their socialistic/commie/Rat followers?

I might have mis-read that somewhere. If I'm wrong, my bad.

Either way, that race hasn't been decided yet, and it's interesting you point out a race in a state where ballot initiatives severely restricting benefits to illegal aliens passed overwhelmingly.

If illegal immigration was a factor in this election, it was because Bush and the Republicans haven't done enough to control it.

Border enforcement is not a third rail. Amnesty is. If the Democrats push one through, they are toast in 2008, and they know it. Notice how it is not on Pelosi's list of priorities.

"So they should have courted illegals at the expense of totally alienating the GOP base?"

NO....
But the Millions of Hispanics marching in the streets should have been your first clue...

Dems have an ability to take BOTH sides of an issue that we are not allowed to have by the media, and Democrats will say anything to win.

Bottom Line: The Border Bunch cost us the very group that put us over the top in 2004, and the media willingly played along...

If illegal immigration was a factor in this election, it was because Bush and the Republicans haven't done enough to control it.

Then why did the democrat whose first vote will be for nancy pelosi to be Speaker, win?

We should look at the whole polls, not just to select portions. The Fox poll referred to said that 69% wanted to see the illegals here have an opportunity to apply for guest worker programs.

Here are a few during the Senate debate:

FOX 7/13/06
37% to 32% feel Democrats would do better job on immigration
37% to 31% feel Republicans would do better job on border security
Failure to pass a bill would be Bush and Republican congressional fault 43%. Democrats in congress 21%
41% to 36% Immigrants give to the country rather than take away
51% say immigrants should decrease; 41% no change or increase
34% feel borders should be secured first; 35% feel deal with those here first; 28% both equally

Tarrance Group Survey 6/12-13/06
75% of likely voters wanted something similar to the Senate version
49% said it was not amnesty
95% said it was important to pass a bill this year

Gallup 6/8-25/06
59% said immigration should remain at current levels or increase
67% said immigration was a good thing; 28% said bad
66% said illegals cost too much; 29% pay fair share
74% say illegal immigrants take jobs most Americans don't want
66% say illegals should remain if they meet certain requirements; 16% want to deport all

LA Times/Bloomberg 6/24-27/06
34% - 23% Democrats can do better on immigration
87% say immigration is most important or one of most important issues
51% say illegals take jobs no American wants
46% support guest worker program; 22% oppose
67% want illegals to have a path to citizenship
44% want a felony for being in US illegally
58% want a tougher enforcement combined with a guest worker program
22% want only tougher enforcement
60% will be disappointed if no bill is passed this year

NBC/Wall Street Journal 6/9-12/06
50% want increased border security
40% want a guest worker program; 34% do not
More today believe Democrats will do better on immigration than 11/05
50% feel immigration helps; 50% feels it hurts. 12/05 hurts was 53%, helps was 37%
50% favor the Senate Bill; 33% favor the House Bill

CBS News Poll 6/10-11/06
33% approve of President Bush on immigration; 56% disapprove

API/Ipsos 5/15-17/06
52% believe immigration is a good influence on US; 46% a bad influence

Fox News Poll 5/16-18/06
57% feel illegal immigration is very serious problem, 29% somewhat serious
63% favor letting those with jobs apply for legal, temporary worker status
55% favor sending as many back as possible

CBS News Poll 5/16-17/06
77% favor Senate approach to citizenship
61% favor a guest worker program

CNN Poll 5/16-17/06
50% disapprove of Bush handling of immigration; 36% approve
79% favor the Senate approach to citizenship
66% favor increasing penalties for employers who hire illegals

ABC News/Washington Post Poll 5/11/15/06
77% feel US not doing enough to prevent illegal immigration

Newsweek Poll 5/11-12/06
61% disapprove of Bush handling of immigration

CBS News/NY Times Poll 5/4-8/06
61% say legal immigration should be at current levels or increased; 34% say decreased
89% say illegal immigration is a very serious or somewhat serious problem
53% feel illegal immigrants take jobs no one wants; 36% feel they take jobs away
61% feel illegals should be given chance to keep jobs; 35% feel they should be deported
66% oppose a 700 mile fence; 29% favor
70% feel illegals weaken the economy

These polls show that most Americans consider immigration a serious issue, most want strong enforcement, but most want something similar to the Senate version.
And what's even more telling is that most Americans feel the Democrats will do a better job on immigration than Republicans.

For the same reason republicans continue to vote for Specter, McCain, and other RINO's. It's the party above America.

Both parties have an apparatchik in place and both count on Americans who refuse to think for themselves and are content to let the Karl Roves, Tony Snows, Howard Deans and Nancy Pelosi's do their thinking for them.

Please raybbr, first of all specter runs for a state wide race, where democrat registarion in PA is appx. 3-2, while GOPer Hayworth loses in a Congressional district where GOP registration is 5-3.

Raybbr your head is spinning.

By a ratio of three to one, Americans prefer to decrease rather than increase immigration into the U.S.[1] But the immigration bill passed by the Senate (“The Comprehensive Immigration Reform Act,” S.2611) contained a vast increase in legal immigration. This enormous increase in legal immigration has been effectively concealed from the public. From here.

Oppose Amnesty

By eight-to-one, Americans think it is unfair to grant rights to illegal immigrants while thousands of people wait each year to come to the United States legally. Fully eighty-six percent of Republicans think it is unfair, as do seventy-seven percent of Democrats.
Opinion Dynamics Poll for FOX News, April 4-5, 2006

Sixty-five percent of those surveyed said they would be willing to pay significantly higher prices for some goods and services should that be the result of tighter control of the southern U.S. border and a resulting lower number of undocumented workers.
Zogby Poll, March 31-April 3, 2006

Fifty-six percent of
Americans polled say the U.S. should NOT grant temporary-worker status to foreigners who are here illegally, as this would make them and their families eligible for government services while they are here. We should not reward people who have broken the law, and this will encourage even more people to enter the United States illegally.
NBC News/Wall Street Journal Poll, March 10-13, 2006

Which one? You make my point. Bush and the Republican leadership ignored and infuriated the conservative base, and enough of them, added to a shift in independent voters, added to historic electoral swings, gave congress back to the Democrats.

And even though Republicans lost, many of the races were very close, enough so that recapturing congress in 2008 is easily within reach. We only need to take back 7 seats in the house to regain control. All is not lost, and I am not that worried about it.

Your assertion that a tough stance on ILLEGAL immigration cost the GOP the election is simply ludicrous.

....a point that the die hard B-bots and k00laid drinkers will NEVER admit. It is political suicide for the Republican party, plain and simple.

You do know that J.D. Hayworth was a frequent guest on Imus's show and would trash President Bush, incessantly.

I guess the the majority GOP district J. D. Hayorth was representing might as well go with the real Bush trasher, the democrat, just to get Mr. Microphone J.D. Hayworth off the air, and elect a real conservative in 2008.
