Newly re-elected Sen. Joe Lieberman has been promised by Sen. Harry Reid who is in line to become the next Senate Majority Leader that he will support Liebermans efforts to become chairman of the powerful Homeland Security Committee.
In a private phone call on Wednesday, Nevadas Reid told Lieberman that he would recognize Lieberman as the senior Democrat on the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, which would facilitate Liebermans move into the post.

Funny you should mention McCain in this regard, 'cause he's going to be the real "odd man out" in the upcoming Congress. His soon-to-be former Democrat buddies, recognizing that John is the nominal Republican Presidential front-runner, are going to be acing him out of any opportunity to sponsor or cosponsor legislation (or to otherwise bask in the limelight he once enjoyed). His Chris Matthews "college tours" are also going to be curtailed.
No thanks.
They are terrified he is going to flip to our side. LOL I don't like Lieberman, but hes got them scared to death. They hate him but they can't show it. I love it!
Thats what he is doing and the DUmmies are livid! LOL
Note the difference between Pelosi, who is not putting any 'hawks' in positions of power, and Reid, who is forced to.
Lieberman could be our ace in the hole in stopping any anti-Iraqi war movement and also frustrating the Democratic base that thought we would be leaving tomorrow.
This could suppress their turnout in 08, espically the young (18-20) group, who the Democrats did a good job in getting them motivated to vote and voted mostly against the war.
If just a few % of them sit the next election out, the result should be a favoriable to the GOP.
Lieberman should be careful. If there is a major attack on the US during his watch the long knives will be out for him and Bush.
You are only about to start squealing like pigs. Wait until you get to watch the Dems run Congress. We are so serious screwed.
Like I said, Lieberman's in the catbird seat. How I wish we had a conservative independent in a similar position!
Good, now maybe Susan will have the time to get her tongue unglued from the bottom of her mouth so she can talk like a normal person.

LIEBERMAN SUPPORTS SIGIR EXTENSION
Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee Ranking Member Joe Lieberman, D-Conn., issued the following statement today in reaction to a front page New York Times story on the Special Inspector General for Iraq Reconstruction.
While I have strongly defended the invasion of Iraq, I have also always questioned the way the war was being executed. From the beginning, I have called on the Administration to do a better job of planning for and overseeing the Iraqi reconstruction effort. I have a lengthy record of speaking out against and asking for investigations and hearings into the gross neglect of reconstruction contractors and those agencies charged with overseeing them.
As a result, I have been a strong advocate for the office of the Special Inspector General for Iraq Reconstruction since it was first created. This office has done exceptional work, uncovering waste, mismanagement, and fraud on a massive scale, involving billions of squandered taxpayer dollars.
Most tragically, the waste and mismanagement the SIGIRs office has uncovered shortchanges our soldiers in the field and impedes the overall war effort.
For that reason, the SIGIRs work must continue for as long as American taxpayers are helping to reconstruct Iraq. That is why I object strenuously to a provision inserted into the Defense Department spending bill that would terminate the SIGIRs office in October 2007. Senator Collins and I wrote to the Secretaries of Defense and State this week calling for greater contractor transparency and we informed them that we would introduce legislation to repeal the expiration date and extend the life of the SIGR.
The fact is Special Inspector General Stuart Bowen has brought to light many of the abuses that have occurred during the Iraq war. He and his staff have courageously traveled throughout Iraq to inspect projects, large and small. They found that the Coalition Provisional Authority could not account for nearly $9 billion dollars it distributed to Iraq ministries. They determined that the government had lost track of thousands of 9-millimeter pistols and hundreds of assault rifles and other weapons distributed to Iraqi forces. They determined that Halliburton wasted $75 million on a failed pipeline project, after ignoring an engineering consultants advice that the project required further study. These are just a few of the examples of the SIGIRs outstanding work.
Unfortunately, when it came to planning and implementing the reconstruction of Iraq, this Administration took far too many shortcuts. We continue to suffer the consequences, as do our troops and the Iraqi people.

Your typical intellectually honest Dem. Appoint a guy who is 180 out with the party on the war to the Homeland Security post.
The democrats are trying to use the 9/11 chairmanship as a "prime minister" who gets selected by the majority party.
Many european nations have a "president" and a "prime minister" the president is largly ceremonial.
That is why the 9/11 commission enactments have also become a huge issue for pelosi.
How liberal are Lieberman and Collins?:

LIEBERMAN, SMITH FIGHT FOR DOMESTIC PARTNERS
Federal Employees In Committed Partnerships Deserve Benefits
Senators Joseph Lieberman, D-Conn. and Gordon Smith, R-Ore., sought co-sponsors Monday for legislation they plan to introduce extending domestic partner benefits to federal employees.
In a letter to their colleagues, the two Senators noted that a majority of Fortune 500 companies provide the same benefit programs to domestic partners of employees as they do to spouses of employees.
Overall, more than 8000 private-sector companies make such benefits available to employees domestic partners, as do several hundred state and local governments and colleges and universities, the Senators said in their letter.
Lieberman said, This bill is very affordable, it is fair, and it is right. My home state of Connecticut provides benefits to domestic partners, and I am proud to be part of this effort to extend benefits to domestic partners of federal employees. While this bill has a very modest cost to the government, it will have a significant impact on federal employees living in domestic partnerships and will assist our government in competing for the most qualified personnel
Smith added: Federal employees should be able to extend their benefits to loved ones, Smith said. Its a matter of fairness and I think the government should be leading the way rather than following.
Based on the experience of private companies and state and local governments, CBO has estimated that offering benefits for same-sex domestic partners of federal employees should only increase the cost of those programs by less than one half of one percent.
Surveys show that private corporations provide domestic partner benefits in part to recruit and retain employees. Many top American corporations provide such benefits, including GE, Chevron, Boeing, Texas Instruments, Hospital Corporation of America, Lockheed Martin, Duke Energy Corp., and BellSouth.
In addition, the governments of 13 states, including Connecticut and Oregon, and 139 cities and towns, from Stamford, Conn., to Atlanta, Ga., and from Albuquerque, N.M.., to Eugene, Ore. provide benefits to domestic partners of employees.
In surveys, non-federal employers report that the reasons they cover employees domestic partners are to boost recruitment and retention of employees, as well as, of course, to be fair. The Federal Government is in competition with these same companies and state and local governments for qualified personnel, yet federal agencies cannot match the domestic-partner benefits offered by major non-Federal employers.
Under the Domestic Partner Benefits and Obligations Act, expected to be introduced in early September, a federal employee and same-sex domestic partner unrelated by blood and living together in a committed intimate relationship would be eligible to participate in federal retirement benefits, life insurance, health benefits, workers compensation, and Family and Medical Leave. Such employees and their domestic partners would also assume the same obligations that apply to married employees and their spouses, such as anti-nepotism rules and financial disclosure requirements.

Lieberman will get anything he wants, LOL. Without Lieberman they don't have a majority and Harry Reid won't be the majority leader.
She replaces Collins of Maine. Am I crazy to think that this seems like an improvement?
Kind of reminds ya of the Jumping Jim Jeffords days
Though, I don't think Joe is that stupid
Ditto.
Will someone please point me to the chapter in the Civics textbook that describes how the Committees are organized when the actual count of Senators is tied; 49-D, 49-R, 2-I? Why should the DemoKratz get control if this is the actual split?
Yup..there's nothing more conservative than a pro-abortion Orthodox Jew...
