Wreck Occurred Along Tracks Near Baxter

BAXTER, Calif. -- One person died and several others were injured when a maintenance train derailed and caught fire Thursday just south of Interstate 80 near Baxter in Placer County, officials reported.

The wreck occurred at about 11 a.m. along tracks used by passenger and freight trains traveling over the Sierra, officials said.

Sheriff's Lt. George Malim confirmed one dead and six to eight people injured.

The train, known as a grinder and consisting of a locomotive and eight cars, was going down a grade when the accident took place, officials added. It was carrying 6,000 gallons of hydraulic fuel and 1,500 gallons of diesel, said Tina Rose, spokeswoman for the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.

Union Pacific spokesman Mark Davis said four crew members, one other Union Pacific employee and up to four contract workers were aboard. He said two of the contract workers were missing.

"Don't know the cause -- that is under investigation," Davis said.

A fire fueled by diesel fuel was burning at least one of the cars. Some brush burned nearby, but the fire appeared to be contained.

Union Pacific officials said the National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the cause of the derailment.

Just had the news on and they said Amtrack is losing a thousand dollars a second because that line is closed and has been since 11am this morning.

It might take some time clean that up. A thousand dollars a second you say. That's an ouch.

A thousand dollars per SECOND?? Is that possible? That would be $3.6 million per hour. Are you sure you heard that right?

Bad spot for a wreck. Praying for the crew.

Checking Google News... Both North-South and East-West Amtrak traffic has been halted. Like someone said, bad spot for a wreck.

This is most likely correct, albeit being dramatized by quoting it by the second. My company is under contract to BNS&F to respond to HazMat incidents and derailments. Last summer they had a derailment that shut down a mainline track in central CA for over 24 hours, and several million dollars per hour was the amount of money they said it was costing them.

Condolences to the UP & contract worker's families.

p.s.
A) I know it's silly and makes no sense, but there's no "C" in AMTRAK.
B) Passenger railroads historically lose money, in this case it's your money, my money, taxpayers money. Tonight they're just losing it faster.

Cute pic. Thanks for the correction. Is that a company issued purse or what? Can't really tell what it is... A purse, a big ol' seat cushin for a big-a**ed featherbedder, or what? :-)

You know I'm just ribbing 'ya, right Ben?

BTW, I "drove" my first train back in '53 or thereabouts. Wasn't any silly-spelled AMTRAK back then, let me tell 'ya.

Good point. Have no idea, really. Did a Google search and got some hits on "hydraulic fuel," but still don't know what it is!

How is that any different from their day-to-day financial status?

Now she's trying, just trying to get home again
