For many I've built all my computers (except the portable ones) from parts. I've always been quite happy with them.

But I just picked up a new Mac Pro desktop the other day. I needed a new machine I didn't want to mess with picking out a motherboard or sound card, waste time fighting with drivers, or spend a week getting the darn sound to work right on BSD/Linux. I just don't have the time for that anymore.

The Mac may have less selection, but what is out there is very nice, and it just works. Mac software and hardware seems to be a little more polished in general that that for the PC. Maybe (?) a little more money, but it is worth it to me to have my computer just work.

Any boy does it work. OSX is very well designed, and quite enjoyable to use. I can run my new mac programs, my standard UNIX development chain natively, X11, gnome and kde apps, MS Office, all without a reboot. I can also run windows in parallels if need be to support all my legacy applications.

Finally, a quick reboot through boot camp and I'm all set for my PC games. That is, the new ones that don't work through dosbox.

I'm not sure what applications I can't run, but I strangely don't feel like I'm missing out.

Many, if not most, individuals are like me and just want a machine that works. That is either because they don't know anything about computer internals, or they just don't have the time to mess with them. I enjoy building computers, but have too many other more important things going on in my life, and very much appreciate the design that went into my new machine to let me worry about those others things instead.
