PROVIDENCE, R.I. --Two days after losing a bid for a second term in an election seen as a referendum on President Bush and the Republican Party, Sen. Lincoln Chafee said he was unsure whether he'd remain a Republican.
"I haven't made any decisions. I just haven't even thought about where my place is," Chafee said at a news conference when asked whether he would stick with the Republican Party or switch to be an independent or Democrat.
When asked if his comments meant he thought he might not belong in the Republican Party, he replied: "That's fair."
Chafee, 53, is the most liberal Republican in the Senate and was the sole Senate Republican to vote against the war in Iraq. That was not enough to save his seat against the winner, Democrat Sheldon Whitehouse, who shared many of Chafee's views but was a member of the dominant party in a state where Democrats far outnumber Republicans.
When asked whether he felt that his loss may have helped the country by switching control of power in Congress, he replied: "To be honest, yes."

I have to say I'm glad he lost......what a joke he is.
"When asked whether he felt that his loss may have helped the country by switching control of power in Congress, he replied: "To be honest, yes."
Jesus. Even more of a RINO than I thought.
He could likely get elected as a RAT since they wouldn't even remember he was a Republican. Or just have a sex change operation and run as Linda Chafee having no balls he is already half way there.
After the WH and the GOP campaign committee worked for him in the primary, he's an ungrateful SOB.
I don't think the Dems need him in RI since they dominate in the state so who is gonna support him? Stick a fork in him.
Hey Mr. Chafee, try not letting the door hit your a** as you leave.
Good riddance and, please take Miss Snow with you!!!!!!!!
He might switch parties? Who gives a rat's behind now! It won't make a difference once he's out of the Senate since he'll probably never be heard from again. We're probably lucky he didn't win otherwise he would have jumped ship in a 50-50 Senate and given control to the Dems anyway.
when WAS he a Republican ???? That R after his name meant nothing.
Switch parties just so he can vote in a different primary?
Who the hell cares what party he wants to belong to.
Good freakin' riddance, Linc.
Adios Chaffee you RINO good for nothing.
Has anyone told him he lost yet? Who cares what he does? He doesn't have a job. Burger flippers normally aren't associated with either party.
He was never "with" the GOP anyway
Chafee was pretty unsure of staying with the GOP when he WAS legitimately elected to the post.
No Bush cabinet appointments for YOU, Linc, old boy.
Don't let the door hit you in the ass on the way out.
"If Chafee had lost the GOP primary and then pulled a Lieberman and run as an independent is there anyone who doesn't think he'd be the Senator in January?"
Uh Yes..me Real Republicans in RI, and yes there are still a few of us, would never have voted for Chaffee over Laffey, (the primary challenger that Chaffee beat).
Instead we got to choose between Dumb and Dumber..Whitehouse and Chaffee.
To think that funds from the national Republican Party went to help this guy in his primary against a more conservative opponent, and then he can't make up his mind if he is a Republican?
Chafee is a complete scum. I am glad that he is gone. We should never get ourselves in a position where we must rely on the likes of him.
I haven't made any decisions. I just haven't even thought about where my place is,"
Yeah, lovely. This is the traitor that Bush and the RNC supported over the grassroots candidate in the primaries. And they wonder why they lose?
RINO retirement for Chaffee. Have a good swim Linc.
