With all due respect, do you seriously believe that Rummy really resigned on his own? What happens is that the president has someone inform him that he will accept his resignation, and the person resigns rather than being fired. That's how the game is played. This was just a bit more transparent than normal.
To me, this sounds childish. Anyone with top secret security clearance may lie to reporters and anyone else. To say anything else is just naive.
