Ed Bradley, the veteran "60 Minutes" correspondent and one of the pioneering black journalists of his generation, died today. He was 65.
Bradley, who had won 19 Emmy awards, covered an incredible array of stories after joining the CBS newsmagazine in 1981, from brain cancer to sexual abuse in the Catholic Church to the high school shootings at Columbine.
He also reported a number of award-winning documentaries, covered political conventions and filled in on the "CBS Evening News" and other programs.
Bradley remained active on "60 Minutes," but he had been ill for some time and underwent heart surgery about a year ago.
"He was this gentle giant," said Bob Schieffer, CBS's chief Washington correspondent and a close friend. "He just did so much for so many African-American kids. He was a great role model."
That was a great piece.
Sorry to hear of his death, prayers for his family.
And then all sorts of bubbles started popping (Tech, etc) toward the end of his presidency, and Bush inherited a declining economy, but there's no mention of that, is there?
I feel your pain, brother...
Ed sure took Rather to school during the 2004 election. Rest in peace.
:-)
He did a very fair report about the Duke Lacrosse travesty of justice. I didn't even know that 60 minutes could do a fair story. RIP
Was he gay? I realize that lots of guys wear earings now, but at his age it seems like sorta old school SF homo behaviour? Anyone know?
I sure didn't know. RIP Ed.
Yes, Conservomax, you are bad for thinking he was older.
Yes, RichInOC, you are bad for wishing it'd been Rooney.
You are BOTH very very BAD!
Thanks for the heads up. I went to FR Activism Search. I put in EMMETT TILL. A wealth of information there. 13 items down, is from History News Network of the George Mason University. This on 60 minutes and the way it charged down to Mississippi .
I believe he was praised for his journalism in the Duke University case. Sadly, I cannot thus praise Mr Bradley in the 2004 inquiry on Till's death.
Enough said, I certainly never would take pleasure in a human being suffering. Still, nothing we can do,except hope he passed away peacefully.
What a surprise.
Good-bye to an American institution.
Rest in peace, Ed.
Thank you for the great photo.
I liked Ed.... most of the time:)
Rest in peace.
I remember as a teenager I saw a profile piece about Bradley.
During the interview he said "Right is right even if no one else is doing it, and wrong is wrong even if everyone else is doing it", and attributed this to St. Augustine as quoted to Bradley by Bradley's father while growing up.
I never forgot that quote - and to this day try to keep in mind when I make decisions.
Sadly, Bradley did not seem to practice this in his professional life, as he simply followed the pack as a biased member of the drive-by media who claimed to be simply an honest and balanced reporter.
Sorry to hear about your Dad.
Bill's (SIN) problems began with fatigue. He was a hard worker and good provider for his family, and his problems began suddenly. With today's technology he was able to live a few years longer, but your Dad probably didn't have all that available to him when he faced leukemia.
I lost my Dad when he was only 54, he had a massive heart attack. I often think he could be alive today had he had the technology (heart bypasses and cartiod artery surgery) we have available today.
