Indiana Democrats Running As Conservatives

KOKOMO, Ind. (AP) -- The Democratic challengers considered most likely to unseat incumbent Republican congressmen in Indiana next month are all running as conservatives.

Former Congressman Baron Hill's Web site mentions "My Faith in God," "The Sanctity of Marriage," and opposition to late-term abortions.

Joe Donnelly says he opposes abortion and wants no part of a mandated troop withdrawal from Iraq.

Vanderburgh County Sheriff Brad Ellsworth campaigns on his career in law enforcement and appears on his Web site carrying a hunting rifle.

Ellsworth is running against incumbent John Hostettler in the Eighth District, Donnelly against Chris Chocola in the Second District and Hill against Mike Sodrel in the Ninth District.

The three Democrats have benefited from more than $3.5 million from the Democratic campaign committee, most of it in commercials attacking their rivals, yet say they are not Washington insiders.

And neither Donnelly nor Ellsworth will say how he would vote when it comes time to elect a Speaker -- sure evidence that Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi of California is not viewed as a political asset.

I know where there are a lot of nice tall trees. I'll be happy to show the demorats where they are.

I hope you are right.

Maybe it's just me and the rural town I live in but I believe, despite yesterday's election results, the U.S. population is still moving to the political right.

The US population has gone rightward enough that many libs, like Hillary, find it necessary to hide their true opinions

OK, great. How do you think the people will react when Donnely votes for gay marriage?

Guess what? That IS happening.

Do you mean those states (Rustbelt, etc) are losing population?

Of course, Evan Bayh governed as a conservative when he was governor of Indiana and now votes liberal about 80% of the time as a Senator.

Along party lines for the most part.

That particular was just not a major player in this election. Again, I live here--and I never, ever heard anyone bring that up (except me, of course). That issue was trumped BIG TIME by the Toll Road, Iraq War, Mitch Daniels, and loss of manufacturing jobs in the region (not necessarily in that order).

There is some population loss in many areas--but even where the states are not losing population--there is virtually no growth (relative to the rest of the country). Hence, as you stated, the loss of electoral votes. Indiana for one.

When Donnely votes along party lines on Gun bills, abortion, taxes, border security and the like, I think the next Republican candidate will take the side of the Toll Road, hopefully the Demorats can fix Iraq and that wont be an issue/sac, be against Mitch and then tell the folks that he/she will vote to repeal all the gun laws the dems made, and he promises never to side with a liberal, then he/she could win easily.

The Toll Road damage has already been done. It is a 'done deal' for generations to come--so no Republican candidate can ever fix it.

They are trying to do that here in Texas and folks don't like it here.

Can folks get away with not using the toll road?

Manufacturing employment is down but value added by manufacturing is up.

This is a sign that the nature of manufacturing is changing dramatically. Eventually most of it will be performed by machines commanded by a handful of people, or maybe none at all.

It's happening faster the general public imagined it would if, in fact, they imagined it.

Northern and Southern Indiana are a study in contrasts ~ unemployment is way down in the South while people in the North are upset about the presence of a wealthy foreign company running the Toll Road.

Even Kentucky has a lower unemployment rate than Northern Indiana and those guys aren't even educated.

It pays to change the base of employment if you want to have a future where you live ~ else you have to move.

BTW, you'd best believe the folks in Southern Indiana are not happy about the prospect of having a whole lot of new people moving in.

Sure, if your time is worth absolutley nothing--and you don't mind spending two or three times (or more) the travel time--due to traffic, lower speed limits and stop lights.

Well I'm strongly in favor of it. South Texas has always gotten the short end of the stick when it comes to highway funding. It'll be nice to be able to travel from south Texas to the Dallas-Fort Worth area without having to go through all the congestion on I-35 going through San Antonio and Austin all the way up to Hillsboro.

Thanks for all the information. I wasn't aware of what is going on. I'm from the Midwest, but haven't been back in almost 5 years, since my mother moved to NY to live with us.

One thing I fear is what if the Democrat Party started attracting all of our moderate conservatives and became "the party of fiscal responsibility"? Sounds far-fetched? It seems like a lot of independents who voted Dem last night felt the Dem would do just that.

I don't think we can afford to abandon our center.
