1st lady speaker to clean House

WASHINGTON – The night began as a squeaker, but it led to a new House speaker.

In a historic political evening, Democrats swept Republicans out of power in the House of Representatives for the first time since the 1994 Republican revolution that made Newt Gingrich the speaker. Control of the Senate was hanging in the balance with the George Allen-Jim Webb race in Virginia too close to call with more than 99 percent of the vote counted.

Two years after a decisive election victory for President Bush and Republicans, Democrats picked up more than the 15 seats they needed to recapture control of the 435-seat House for the first time since 1994.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi of California – in line to become the first woman speaker in history – said as the returns rolled in, "Democrats support change. Democrats propose a new direction for all Americans, not just the privileged few."

"We are on the brink of a great Democratic victory," she predicted earlier in the evening.

Democrats needed to gain six seats to reclaim control of the 100-seat Senate for the first time in four years, and so far had taken three seats from Republicans.

Pelosi, 66, appears certain to be elected House speaker by fellow Democrats when the new 110th Congress convenes in January, replacing Dennis Hastert, an Illinois Republican.

Under U.S. law, the speaker is second in the line of succession to the presidency, behind only the vice president.

Even if she isn't sandbagged, I think there will be a ton of infighting by the happy winners.

I wonder if the MSM will report any of it?

Those folks love power and as far as they are concerned, being IN CHARGE is the prize. And they can't all be IN CHARGE at the same time.

This could be fun, but right now it is just nauseating.

When Durbin or whoever called VP Cheney a "SOB', that shoudl have been trumpeted all over the place. When any of those people said and did the filthy things they did, those acts should have been all over the news. But the Republican leadership just rolled over and begged for more.

We deserve everything that has happened. Our president, much as I love him, is out of touch on issues that are important to many of us - and nearly a Dem on a lot of other issues.

Time will tell how this pans out. Just remember we survived (well 3000+ of us did not survive) the Clinton years - surely this won't last as long as that did -

Is she going to "sweep" impeached Congressman Alcee Hastings out of the House? He is in line to be Intel Chairman.

Pretty sure the answer there is no... Nor will she sweep out Barney "my gay roomate ran a whorehouse out of my townhome" Frank either. But the lamestreet media will give the wicked witch of the west a pass.

Hastings is troubling for sure, because of his past. The Dems may be giddy to have won but they're also going to want to stay - so I'd look for some restraint.

Pelosi might be female, but she's no lady for sure.

Pelosi said to Diane Sawyer that the most important thing in this election was to make Bush and Cheney lame ducks. Not the War on Terror, not the economy, not unemployment. Being back in power. After that she went into hiding until last night. Power is all that's important to them,

How sexist to force the first female speaker to have to clean the House. Don't they have custodians!

I thought that was what female democrat Secretary's of State were for.
or is that Secretary of States?

Does this mean this woman sits in the throne behind the President when he gives the State of the Union address? Right next to Cheney?!

This is ...so wrong!!!

That image alone may be more upsetting than anything else today.

Yes! Put Murtha's face on the news every single night, with sound - lots of it!

Pelosi is going to clean house? Does she think she can fire the Replicans? Maybe someone should explain how this election thingy works, to her. In one-syllable words, so she can grasp the concept.

After all her zings at the President and his intellect, exactly what is her educational background, does anyone know?

Is she a genius as she would like us to believe? Inquiring minds want to know, but my gut can't take any googling at this time.

I can't wait to see Ma Ma Pilosi sitting next to Cheney during the State of the Union Speech in January. The body language will be unbelievable. I hope the GOP sets it up for some good clips to be used during the 2008 Convention. This is going to be fun and almost guarantees a Republican resurgence.
