Heard on the radio here just now that there are roughly about 100,000 mail-in ballots still to be counted, and roughly 50,000 of those were brought to the polls yesterday. And with the race being this close: Mitchell - 71,077 - 51% Hayworth - 65,122 - 46% and with Hayworth not yet conceeding, its possible we could hold this seat.

Yes, they tend to. I'm waiting for another update on the radio.

Seemingly defeated incumbents have come back from the dead when the absentee votes are counted (didn't that happen to Jack Metcalf in 1996?), so anything's possible. Any chance of that here, or is the margin too steep?

Good afternoon.
"Bush has declared that he'll roll over for anything Pelosi wants, no matter how putrid it is to his base if they just won't say anything bad about him... and the RINO's will enable it..."
I must have missed that, newby. Either that or the voices in your head are lying to you again.

This should never have been close! I don't get it. And poor Melissa Hart who is so good. This is TERRIBLE, TERRIBLE that good people should lose.

The bush bashers are so enjoying this day.
Kind of pathetic, but then this has been the undercurrent for a long long time. Probably from the day he announced he was running for President.

RINO Chaffee is gone so that should not be such a problem. Maybe Lindsay Graham will not be puffing up his chest so much any more.

Good afternoon.
"I am not a big fan of early voting and absentee ballots."
I'm not either, but we were given no choice. We received ballots in the mail with notes informing us that our voting site had been closed and we now had to vote absentee.
To make matters worse, TPTB held back the results of the District Attorney race out of fear that our recently dead DA was going to win and they are trying to figure out what to do about it.

Thats not at all what he said. He said he would work with whoever the leadership was, sit down and discuss things, and support the things that they agreed on. His goals haven't changed since 2000.

Ironically, Arizonians passed a measure to make English their official state language and then oust Hayworth. Weird.

The difference between Arizona and the Metcalf and Smith races in 1996 in Washington, is that Washington has FAR more Absentee votes then Arizona, AND they only needed to be POSTMARKED by election day, not delivered. Unless that's changed recently, I don't see how this flips, I believe Arizona has neither...In Metcalf's case, he was down, but something like half the vote hadn't been counted. I don't think that's the case here.

Under federal law, overseas and military absentee votes must be counted in federal elections if they are postmarked by election day and received by the state as long as 10 days after election day.
You're right that the number of absentees in Washington are always higher than anywhere else, but apparently they're fairly high in AZ as well. High enough to swing the race to J.D.? That I don't know.

I can't believe this race was even close. I didn't even think he was in a race.
I admit, I got blindsided by quite a few races here. I didn't think there was a realistic chance in either NH seat fliping either.

The latest update on the radio was that there were over 100,000 absentee and provisional ballots still to be counted in his district.
To those who think the number is absurd, look at the current vote tally, "Mitchell - 71,077 - 51% Hayworth - 65,122 - 46%" and then look at the fact that the population of his district as of 2000 is 641,329 and has been growing fast.
To: Neidermeyer
That is NOT what Bush said during his press conference. You are totally reading into it your own hatred of the President.

It worried me this year because alot of the recorded phone calls were telling you that the last day to mail ballots was Nov 2. I have never trusted the mail to get things done in a timely manner. AZ did not care when the ballots were postmarked.

Republicans have been pushing absentee voting as a way to get "votes in the bank." I think in this election they discovered that this isn't a magic bullet. Putting a ballot in the mail or going to a polling place both require an engaged, motivated voter.
