Personally I would have felt better if Baker had left his law firm, with offices in Bahrain and Riyadh, before undertaking policymaking on behalf of the government, but so be it.

Why? I mean he's owned by Saudi Inc either way.

"They must've have been planning this before the election."

Yes, and they should have announced this before the election.

Bush just said Rumsfeld was here to stay last week.

That statement probably cost a few of those House seats.

He obviously made that statement in order to squelch the rumor that Rumsfeld was out. They apparently did not want to give the impression of weakness before the election.

They obviously did not consult with Rove on this. Or maybe Rove has been demoted from the coveted position of "Magnificient Bastard" to just plain "Bastard."

Rummy doesn't do email. Maybe we should have an appreciation thread for him.

And an Eagle Scout at that! ACLU - deal with that.

Exactly what I was thinking.

Bush, "I made the change" - so it sounds more like a push than Rummy walking away.

Rumsfeld's resignation disgusts me. I had hoped today 'we' would come out standing firm and swinging. Instead, we give in with sacrificing Sec. Rumsfeld- one of the last 'few good men'. If this is the direction the Republicans think is a winner, I'm not going along. I intend to write to Sec. Rumsfeld to let him know he is greatly appreciated and I am sorry to see him go. The Dems win another one.....

That's true, but it looks bad.

Heard GWB's speech. Good campaign speech if delivered 6 weeks ago. It could have made a difference. Might have disappointed some Republicans though. IMO, this is information we should have had before the election. I think it would have benefited Republicans, but that's not the point.

Congress (the building), could easily be converted to a mosque with minimal expense/disruption. I would not expect Pelosi or Reid to object.

Why what? Will it suck to lose him? He's been a awesome president of A&M.

I must say...if Rumsfeld was going to go anyway, why couldn't it have been BEFORE the election? That might've made a difference.

I doubt it. We didn’t lose this because of Rumsfeld.

If he’d stayed on he’d be spending all his time in front of every committee the Dims could think of. Rummy is smart, with the Dims in control they’d be hounding him 24/7 and he wouldn’t be able to do his job. Unfortunately this was a good choice for him.

Too bad, what a shame. The next 2 years will be hell.

I am tired of this crap and - unfortunately - this President. He squandered an opportunity to define the enemy immediately after 9/11 and failed. He sat back and allowed everyone to punch him from day one. He was not going to compromise on social security - than caved. Rumsfeld was going to stay - now he's gone. Brownie you're doing a fine job - then he's gone. He has caved on virtually everything - even judges. If he wasn't pushed by conservatives, he would have kept Harriet as the nominee. I do not know if the war is lost or not but this is a major, major strategic defeat. He said after 9/11 that the war would be fought on many fronts and then failed to explain not only the military but also the political and media fronts. No, the Islamofacists have not beaten us on the battlefield but they are kicking our arse in the media and political fronts. Bush looks weak and for perception purposes, he is weak. And with him being weak, the United States is weak. I am listening to his explanation concerning Rumsfeld and he sounds like an idiot!

When Israel pulled out of Gaza I knew the Iraq war was lost.

For many months now the American casulties in Iraq were very hard for me to take because I believed it was in vain.

I held back writing here what I felt prior to the election.

No more.

Pull out immediately. Whatever happens happens. It will anyway. But no more Americans have to die.
