Democrat Nick Lampson won the bitter race to succeed former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay on Tuesday, overcoming Shelley Sekula-Gibbs' strong write-in effort to save the seat for the Republicans. Lampson said his victory was indicative of the Democratic Party's return and its cohesiveness. He added that the country deserves and will get a "new direction." Democrats regained control of the U.S. House for the first time in 12 years.
"There are a lot of things I want to do. I want to make sure we do indeed try to create civility in our Congress," said Lampson, who served in the House from 1997-2004 and will return with eight years' seniority. Although two of the four counties in the suburban Houston 22nd Congressional District hadn't fully reported, Lampson won in the most populous counties, Harris and Fort Bend.

That whole deal was so WRONG! I am still mad at DeLay for running in the primary and dropping out thus giving the seat to the DemocRAT when they wouldn't allow the Republican on the ballot.
I hope Lampson enjoys his single term, along with all the other kooks that won GOP seats. We're coming to get them ALL back and then some in 2008.
Oh well, I hope he enjoyed the seat because in 2 short years he's going to get tossed out on his ass.
True, there are going to be a lot of one term wonders.
I was hoping against hope on this one.
Maybe this will be the equivalent to an innoculation for the Republicans. Bush did a lousy job at communicating his message -- waiting to the final hours to get agressive (polls started shifting in his favor but it was too little too late), you had a guy as House Majority Leader who has the charisma of a turnip, and there was little effort to galvanize the base until (again) it was too late.
Maybe if the Republicans had kept their power it would have been at the expense of winning the White House in 2008. Sorry this had to be but it now appears this bitter pill will mean looking at Pelosi and Ried as the leaders of our lower and upper houses.
Me too and same with the Foley seat! Not being able to change the names on the ballots really hurt.
Not only that, but picking a hyphenated, hard to remember name as a write in. Sekula-Gibbs.
Were I her, I would have changed my name to Smith. Most judges will allow it unless you're trying to evade creditors. Or at the very least shorten it to Gibbs. If you're going to run for office, pull out all the stops, I say.
Exactly! Not a smart move!
It's indicative of the Republicans' arrant stupidity in running a weak candidate with a six-syllable, bizarre hyphenated name as a write-in; and, as previously mentioned, DeLay's greed and vanity.
Hopefully Shelley Sekula-Gibbs can stumble off into the Dreaded Private Sector and find something not too challenging to do.

A response offered by many from the Party of the Devisive, Crass; Loathesome and Incivil - as they claim victory;
Just remember that the Repubs must fight three enemies - the terrorists; the Democrats and the MSM-at-large; whereas, the Dems need fight only one. . .
Now both substantially 'lower' given the status of the new leaders. . .
But no whining allowed. Even when we are seething!
It will get worse for us when we hear Obama and Bill Clinton take credit.
No matter what the pundits and pukes pronounce, democrats didn't win this night on their merits, we lost it on our blunders, which the MSM magnified. (That's not whining, it was a factor.) We lost because of:
Our scandals and corruption.
The way the war is going.
Yes, there are quite a few GOP seats that the democrats better not comfortable in, we will be taking them back in 2008!
Yep, no need to go beyond the mirror on this one but then it happens every time we lose our conservative message. We are so thick when it comes to that. I guess it's that we think if we become dims we'll get invited to all the right places.
Wow, remember Reagan? Remember the contract with American? Remember what those conservative messages brought us?
Now we have compassionate conservatism (I guess any other kind isn't compassionate), spending out of control, larger government (anybody heard "smaller government" in the last six years?), more entitlements, borders that are in shreds (that really worked out well at the polls, eh?), and a temporary tax break
Yup, we reaped what we sowed. Maybe if we repeat the cycle enough times we'll understand that if we deliver a conservative agenda we'll win elections again.
This is a one-term congressman if I ever saw one.
Proven by how many of the democrats who won last night, did so by running to the right of their party.
