IMHO - You are correct. A bunch of singularly bad issues all added up. Katrina Debacle, Long Iraq War, Illegal Immigration Issue, Meirs Appointment, Foley Resignation, Lack of Fiscal Spending Control, MidTerm Election History, Weak Congressional Leadership, Delay Scandal in Congress, Numerous Close Races for Incumbent Republicans, MSM Attacks, etc. etc..
This loss has to do with the pathetic prosecution of the war in Iraq. The State Dept and Dept. of Defense are so worried about fighting a PC war that they will not let the military fight the war as they have been taught. The results: War drags on, lots of US casualties, people get tired of never decisively winning and finishing the war. The only way to win is to deliver a crushing blow...and we haven't done that to anyone since WWII.
This loss, also, has to do with the lack of strong leadership in Congress by Republicans. And it has to do with Bush's poor communication skills inhibiting him from being able to rally Republican leaders and Republican voters to work for the program. Just look at the list of failures that took place WITH a Republican controlled Congress. Don't get me wrong, I love the Pres...he just can't get the message out effectively.
We then suffered through attacks on Meiers, the NSA security, Dubai ports, etc. Those creeps act like they are so smart, and they are nothing but worthless sideline carpers who don't contribute a thing to our side, but suck up money we could spend on other things instead of their books and magazines. To heck with them.
And because of this constant criticism, one-issue Republicans stayed home. There were even some who stayed home in Indiana because the Republican governor instituted Daylight Savings Time...real smart, huh?
Pfui. Anyone who comes on here blaming Bush supporters for this loss is a complete jerk, and that is YOU, Brian Baldwin!
Along with the lib media...I couldn't agree more. Unfortunately some of our "special" citizens need a constant reminder they can relate to, feeling there pain and what not...You just know Bush ain't tellin you that pap and lots of independents want it.

The Republicans would have swept to a huge victory if they had not alienated their base support by their:
1. Failure to close the Mexican border and halt illegal immigration,2. Failure to nullify the effects of the Kelo decision--immediately, and
3. Expansion of federal entitlements to include prescription drugs!

There are idiots who want to have a government like the Italians because of their so called "principles".

No Flame.....A United Front would have gone a long way to avoiding the present outcome of the election, however, the Republicans would have had to have united around a conservative agenda to win. They didn't we lost.
There is a lot of disillusionment by those who previously voted Republican because their Republican-held government didn't reduce the size and control of government. Unfortunately, non-defense federal spending has grown MUCH faster with Republicans in control than it did when the Democrats were in control.
Look at the pig trough of congressional budget "earmarks" (expensive pet projects) that have exploded the federal budget during Republican leadership.
Where is a conservative to go?

If the conservatives lost heart and stayed home, who was in power to let them down?

I think it was the off year hit. The same one that MOST presidents take. I'd imagine there are exceptions (FDR in WWII, Clinton after impeachment), but Bush had no such exception. As seriously as we may take the War, most of America is seeing only a running total of US troops lost.
For all of the wailing, we're still around the historical average (I think it's 6 senators, and something like 30 house members) of 'mid term casualties.'
I also think (MHO, of course) that there are a lot of things that we, as opposed to the Dems, hammer out in public that ought to be handled in private. That is to say, 'throw the bums out' in the primary, as opposed to the general, election.
The gripping hand, though, is that it's a lot easier to be unified in public when you don't really have to propose anything. Take immigration as an example. We're all hot and bothered by it, from a number of different points of view. What position do the dems have? That their against us! So, a vote for the D column (or a non-vote in the R) becomes a vote for or against border enforcement, for or against amnesty, for or against compromise, take your pick.
Their policy this year was identical to Carroll's Red Queen's take on the meaning of words: their policy meant exactly what they wanted it to mean at any given moment; it could change on a dime.
As you pointed out, this was an across the board rebuke to the party in charge. Yes, even an anti-war guy (Chafee) lost.
Well, they can now say they've taught those bums a lesson.
Bet it gives 'em a big case of the 'warm fuzzies.'

It may take a few weeks for that to set in on the chattering monkey's. Their days of shouting down Conservatives at every turn are long gone. That reality will either set in, or they will be wondering around in the minority for decades to come. It is their choice. The RATpublican thing didn't work out too well for them. Blackbird.
