It'll be one of them --- or both of them.

I think we're going to need star power and there's no guarantee Rudy's positions on social issues and abortion won't stop him from winning primaries.

Then you are an absolute fool. You'd better check out McCain's history. I live in Arizona and believe me, it stinks to high heavens. Besides, he a weakling. Say what you will about Rudy, but the guy stand up to evil. McCains just rolls up into a ball and cries.

This election was the Republicans' to lose, and they threw it away with both hands. You can't blame the media. That's too easy.

It's actually way past time! But it should be done before the '08 primaries.

Yes, it was real easy for the Dems to say that the Republicans sucked at everything, but they didn't even offer their own solutions. That's what makes this victory of theirs so disgusting.

I found it so frustrating how many people I talked to, especially those with no party affiliation, whose opinion of things basically boiled down to, "Things suck." With no ideas of why they suck, what exactly sucked, or what they would want to see done instead.

"Show me the evidence that the Democrats (!) won tonight because Bush and the Republicans spend too much."

I think it was a bit or a lot of many things mentioned here tonight. There have been many misplayed hands these last eight years. Now we all need to arrive at some sort of direction we want our party to go.

Bush played a role, Democratic lies w/MSM support played a role, lack of direction or a STRONG message too our side, from our side, and played a role, and many other things went wrong that caused tonight.

What is certain is that the poster of this thread is right on some things. Our country is now at risk because we will not continue to fight the WOT, that is done...at least until our the next attack on us. Until then the terrorists will have their way in the world. They will grow stronger. That is certain.

Our economic gains are at risk because the Democrats will take the tax cuts away for a war they will not fight either. Medicare and social security will not be dealt with and will GROW. Look to nationalized health care with an expansion of the prescription drug program that was started under Bush.

Illegal immigrants will be granted amnesty, mainly in an attempt to ensure an overwhelming voter base for the democratic party. This one thing will cause another slice toward death for our economy. It will also change our counry in ways we can not even picture as to society in general and crime in particular.

There is much we need to decide about what we want our candidates to support. None of us are going to solve it tonight, but those things are the facts. They are the state programs of the Democrats and/or their supporters.

Destroying each other is not going to solve the problems but ignoring what lies ahead will. We should table the blame game because the game is over for now.

We just need to decide on a path and work towards that. Where we are at now is NOT where we want to be in 6 months.

I am NOT drunk; I almost never drink alcoholic beverages and when I do, I do so in great moderation. Obviously, the same can not be said about you.

Baiting me isn't helping you any, sweetums.

This loss is to blame on only the republicans whom wanted to punish the gop by staying home or voting third party.

Conservatives didn't stay home. The mushy middle turned on us. It doesn't take much.

In 92, clinton won. In 96, he won again. In 2000, gore won the popular vote. In 2004, JFK almost won.

The mushy middle turned because they have no stomach for Iraq, and Bush and others failed to make the case. We have had a lack of leadership - from Bush, from the Senate, and from the House. It takes work to get the message out against the flow of the MSM - and our folks didn't seriously try.

It only takes 3 percent of the middle turning to switch us from republican to dem.

I used to live in Arizona and am well aware of what McLame is like. But Rudy's baggage is of a different nature, and I think that honestly could make him a tough sell in some areas. You are right though that it would be very hard to predict what exactly McCain would do given his, at times, schizophrenic nature.

You're obviously unaware, then, of the excessive amount of baggage that McQueeg carries.

Say what you will about Rudy...

I'll say nothing negative about the man. Had more Republicans had his optimism and ability to represent their accomplishments over the last 6 years, their would have been fewer losses tonight.

"'Things suck.' With no ideas of why they suck, what exactly sucked, or what they would want to see done instead."

You mean a "national malaise"? ;)

Yup, it'll take someone special to turn that around. We both suspect Nancy Pelosi ain't that someone.

I don't think anyone currently associated with this administration - VP Cheney, Sec'y Rice, Amb Bolton, whoever - can be that someone, either; I'm afraid they're all damaged goods now.

McCain and Rudy are exactly the same on major social issues, if anything Rudy is better. Besides, I'm willing to bet there will be another terrorist strike on the US within the next two years. This loss will have emboldened the terrorists and they will take advantage of what they think is Bush's weakness.

A Great Maxim is "Practice Moderation in All things, including your excesses!"

I modified the old oriental expression a bit...

Time for you to cool off.
(And I am not your "sweetums". You really can't be that sick!)

WWII didn't end with VE or VJ day. We spend years afterwords rebuilding Germany and Japan.

###

The difference is we weren't taking casualities during those years. In 1946 we occupied Germany, Japan, Italy, and northern Africa and we had 5 people KIA and 1 who died of wounds in the whole year, world wide.

After WW II we broke their will to resist before we started nation building. That's what we should have done in Iraq.

The neo-cons like Pearl who are now stabbing Bush in the back, convinced him and Cheney that there would be no resistance in Iraq. which was an assanine assertion.

Iraq wouldn't be an issue if we had 6 battle casualties this year. Tonight the Republican Party is paying the price for that mistake.

Not depressing for me. Imagine how our troops feel.
That they'll lose the war against terrorism.

Imagine how happy the Terrorist's are that they'll be able
to be free after we leave Iraq.

Imagine how many people will die because of this election!!

Imagine the economy after this election.

/Salute to the troops

No, I'm not unaware, as was indicated by my statement that Rudy's baggage is "of a different nature". That implies that McCain has baggage too.

Honestly, I'd rather not have to pick between the two. Hopefully someone else will emerge as a good candidate.

On a personal level, I'd love to see Mark Sanford run, but I know he isn't electable, so that's just a pipe dream of mine and one I don't seriously consider.

There are two things I like about him. He cleaned up New York City, and he's tough on terror.
