Time to say Mr. Rumsfeld, your services no longer needed?

Posted on 11/07/2006 10:04:17 PM PST by meandog

Okay history fans, if Bush is to be compared to Lincoln then maybe he ought to do what the embattled Lincoln did to first War Secretary Simon Cameron in 1862 when his Congress was under fire: Accept Rumsfeld's resignation. Supposedly, the Don of the Pentagon offered it on two occasions, according to the source himself and it is apparent that a change in the tactics of fighting a losing war are now needed. Rumsfeld went against the advice of sound judgement from generals such as Shenseki and others who urged him to invade with at least as many boots on the ground (600,000) as was required in Gulf War I. Ever the arrogant, he ignored them and came with only 120,000--the result was widespread looting, possible WMDs being shipped to places such as Syria and the beginnings of sectarian violence. With 600,000 we had a chance to employ the proven military doctrine of overwhelming force. Now, the opportunity is gone just like the majority we once had in Congress. And, while the president is at it, he might also consider what Lincoln did to Hannibal Hamlin.

Using your logic, we should have a draft in place.

Yep, and it served us well in WWII! There's no reason a draft couldn't serve us again.

Your facts are wrong.

Your position is ignorant and wrong.

Other than that, good post.

One of my main problems with Mr. Rumsfeld:
In the first days of World War II, Army Chief of Staff George Marshall tried desperately to personally write letters of condolences to the loved ones of fallen soldiers but, alas, he couldn't because there were just too many of them. However, he signed as many of those letters as he could. In one respect, we're really lucky in that we currently only are losing two or, perhaps on bad days, three a day in Iraq; there were even less lossed in the fighting a year ago. But, if you'll remember back about a year ago, there was information out of the Pentagon that Rumsfeld was autopenning the letters out to the fallen (IOW, he wasn't even looking at them to sign--somebody else, probably some low-grade enlisted, was signing his name to the ones that the SECDEF's public affairs staff put out). Rumsfeld couldn't even bring himself to personally write one or two letters of condolences a day to the men and women giving their lives for our freedoms. That fact burned me up then and still does today.
President Bush, to his credit, is loyal to his people as evidenced by his refusal to ask for Rummy's resignation. He is loyal to the point of being recalcitrant.
But Rumsfeld loyalty to the soldiers is not evidenced by autopenning letters, IMHO...So, tell me, what is it about him to be so endearing? All I see is a man who can lose a war and also an election for Republicans!

Another reason to get rid of him is that there won't be someone for the Dims to grill once the investigations begin after Jan. 20.

An absolutely incredible statement. You obviously don't know how this will work.

In office or not Rumsfeld will be subpoenaed.

As much as I hate saying this, Gen Shinseki was right. We needed a lot more troops than we went in with. And that was just the first of many mistakes we should have seen coming.

We didn't have them. We don't have them. So it's a moot point.

Well, okay maybe he will...but in no way will it be as bad as it could be if he were still a sitting SECDEF--in Cheney's former words "it is time for him to go!" He's the lightening rod of Iraq and a mighty big reason we lost yesterday!

Maybe Rummy will also figure out that an autopenned letter to the loved ones of fallen soldiers isn't as good as a hand-written personal one!

When you don't make sense you won't see sense. And that statement doesn't make sense. You've gone off the deep end. Try to get control of yourself.

Consider yourself bitten...incidentally, while anglicanism might have preceeded Henry VIII he was certainly the empetus in getting it off the ground. Also, please tell me since you obviously admire him, why do you suppose difficult for Rumsfeld to write one or two letters a day to the loved ones of fallen troops instead of autopenning the ones his PA staff conjures up? click here

Toss Rove, Too.... he's a friggin IDIOT

As the country has been bombarded with liberal sentiment from the media for so many years, I thought Rove did an excellent job. Really, we can't win them all, and the fact is that our party has been diluted by RINOs and gotten away from it's principles. We drove off our base. That's not Rove's fault, it's what he got left to work with.

And it's his job to be an optomist. Not a doom~n~gloomer.

We can't lay this at his feet. We can look to those RINOs who diverted us from our conservative roots by embracing populist views.
