ORLANDO - Katherine Harris ended her bid to unseat Sen. Bill Nelson the way she started: badly down at the polls, snubbed by GOP leaders and defiantly refusing to give in.
''We don't believe in the polls. We believe in the people. Only votes count,'' said Harris, predicting victory as she waved to passersby at the corner of 26th Street and Manatee Boulevard in Bradenton on a drizzly Election Day afternoon.
By then, it was too late.
Nelson jumped to a commanding, double-digit lead early and never let up, indicating that Harris -- contrary to her repeated claims -- had little crossover appeal among Democrats and independents and managed mainly to attract her own Republican base, owing to her hard-right campaign.

It's not their fault she's nuts.
Would you stop and take a look at this whole election? What do you "NOT" get?
I get it all, she is nuts, and had no chance. Therefore the GOP tried to get her not to run.
I'd ask if we can just all get along but then I read your tagline and, well you know.
Well, its a deperessing night, I should have refrained from an argument as a courtesy. Have a good evening!
Even if she'd gotten 10 billion dollars from the RNC, such that every TV and radio commercial seen or heard in Florida for the last 6 months was a Harris commercial, and W, Rudy, and McCain personally visited every single house and apartment in Florida....
She still would have lost.
This is not only about Harris. Cardin has pulled ahead now... Talent will take MO, Allen will take VA, Kyle will take AZ.
Hayworth is losing in AZ. This is pathetic but hey now the Conservatives can really having something to complain about after January 2007.
You don't have to eat any crow.
She has more balls than most of the Republican leadership, across the board. She ran her heart out, even though the White House and Jeb abandoned her.
And if she wasn't the one to run, the GOP could have put up another candidate. She won the primary.
And after tonight, I don't want to see that "Rove the Magnificent" picture, or phrase. If he was an "architect", his license would be taken away. In 2004, Kerry lost due to the Swift Boat Vets and the churchgoers, not due to Rove or the GOP leadership.
We now have the House in the control of left wing Anti American nutjobs--have you seen the Committee head lineup? It is a Communist's dream team. Yeah, we won the Cold War, alright.
The Dems and their corrupt media cohorts framed this campaign as anti-war and anti-Bush, and didn't even offer alternatives, ran horrible people, and still ran away with this election.
Virginia will be decided in the courts at the rate it is going, possibly MO. as well. And if the WH and GOP leadership fight for Allen and for Talent post election like they ran this campaign, you can write both those seats off right now.
This has been a horrible night for us.
The only hope is that we have two years to expose the Dems for the anti American Commie whackjobs that they are, because they will fight to make the last two years of President Bush's term a living hell.
Otherwise, get ready for Her Heinous's coronation on 1/20/09.
EEE, Katherine Harris ran an admirable fight. We'll see her run again sometime.
She ran a horrible race. Amazing we couldn't come up with a better candidate.
I would so love to believe that. I have been a fan of KH since November 2000. A campaign with such a staff turnover as hers cannot be expected to win for either party. We can debate as to whether it was the staff or the candidate that is at fault but the result is the same. She was and would in any case be a loser of this race.
AND she is broke.
She isn't broke. She still has the 6 million dollars that she promised to give to the campaign but never did.
$6M that would have bought some television time.
I'm holding her responsible for much of the mess we're in today. She was advised not to run, that she couldn't win. She countered this by promising to give $10M to her own campaign, which also discouraged other candidates from running in the primary. Then she not only runs a lousy campaign, she fails to give most of the money she promised way back in March. She then gets killed in the general election, and we lose a seat we should have picked up.
If we lose the Senate, this one seat that she cost us will have been a very important one.
I don't Katherine Harris's loss one bit. It's sad to see this great lady suffer such an overwhelming loss.
The reason that I and other Freepers so opposed her Senate campaign was because we didn't want this to happen to her. That's why we spoke out against her candidacy so fervently. Trust me, none of us enjoyed this.
What I wish now for Katherine Harris is that she takes a long vacation to a peaceful, picturesque place and get some rest. Then she can find a suitable outlet for her talents.
Well, the people of Florida have spoken: its far better to have a low-key, luke-warm, lackluster, middle-of-the-road speaking style and voting record, centrist Democrat Senator who is pro illegal immigrant amnesty, against President Bush's tax cuts and favors gay-marriage rather than a quirky A-type personality prone to temper tantrums that refused to listen to advice traditional values solidly conservative under-dog that received no support whatsoever from national GOP leaders that's perky good-looking posed on a horse.
Hey, its not like sending a Republican to the Senate is the least bit important; they're a dime-a-dozen there. The Senate is literally awash in Republicans. IN ANY CASE, the other states pretty much have all that sewed up, so no skin off Florida's nose if they re-elect a Democrat to the Senate.
The resounding cry can be heard throughout the land: CARL ROVE, YOU MAGNIFICANT BASTARD architect of GOP VICTORY! Rah Rah Rah, Rove's our man. If Rove can't do it, NOBODY CAN!
Forgive me if I'm too harsh on Florida's conservative base as the national election results are not entirely ALL their fault. Although, frankly I've been astonished at the degree of antipathy directed towards Harris by Florida's conservative base.
There is silver lining in the mid term loss...Not the Dems have to produce...It is not going to happen....One thing that does worry me is the illegal immigration ussue...I wonder if this President will pass along with the Dems amnesty////If it does this loss will pale in comparision...
Well, to Florida's credit they did elect a governor having potential to fill Jeb's shoes, eh?
I voted for him with holding my nose....I am not sure how conservative he is if at all....We have our work cut out for us down here...Liberals gained positions that they have not had in many years...One thing for sure we have to put good folks up who are conservative and the party must stand with them...Foley hurt us all over the Country...How folks voted down here was all over the map....I can tell you if things had been done different we could have won allot more races down here....
