I'm now projecting Burns to lose by 1583 votes.

What happened?

One thing that happened is Cascade County (Grand Falls), came in a lot closer than it did in 2000. Burns lost the county by 1,990 votes in 2000 (52-46), but ended up only losing by 155 votes (49-49) this time round.

Why? I have no clue. Both of his opponents in 2000 and 2006 were from nearby counties (well, by Montana standards - 100 miles or so away).

Tester's lead is down to 1783.

Meghar will be worth, oh, 500 or so.

It all comes down to Yellowstone and Galltian, where Burns has been leading - and historiclaly would be favored.

This is going to be unimaginably close. A few hundred votes either way. Perhaps fewer.

This discrepancy is perhaps explained by the failure of some republicans, like McCain and other RINOS, to sieze the issue. They voted down the federal marriage amendment, saying it wasn't necessary ... yet we all saw what the NJ court did two weeks ago, and MA may never allow the people to vote on this issue. But my guess is that the real reason pro-marriage amendments pass even when Dems win is that a substantial number of Democrats know in their hearts that marriage is a God-given institution that remains between a man and a woman. Someone should do an analysis, I suppose ...

Why has Beaverhead been zero'ed out on the official site?

No clue. I'm looking at the CNN numbers. It's a fairly small but heavily Republican county anyway. Burns took it 69-30 in 2000 (+1,622), and took it 63-34 this year, according to the CNN tallies (+1,168).

The unions wield a lot of power in this area, along with many other areas, including policy.

But the effect of mandatory minimum wage increases also extends to increases in the number of illegals wanting those jobs who are willing to work for the previous, lower rate, further undercutting many jobs Americans used to do especially in the building trades.

Some of you may have heard that Daniel Ortega is taking over Nicaragua again. Expect a big influx of illegal aliens from Nicaragua.

Oh gawd I hope they fight but wow I just don't see enough pitbulls in there.

They don't have a choice now but fight. Fewer RINOs and new leadership (not old guard like Frist, Lott, Dole...) will help or they will lose the base completely and they know it.

Rove & Co spent almost a year fighting for more-than-a-minimum immigration bill, practically ignoring Iraq and economy - every time Bush made speeches on these his polls went up - I never understood that, I think Rove misfired here big time. Also spending time and money defending RINOs in "blue" states instead of shoring up support for Republican conservatives against their pseudo-conservatives in "red" states - just an easy campaign like "I respect my opponent and we agree on most or all issues, but a vote for him gives a vote to Nancy Pelosi or Harry Reid". Simple, and I think, effective, but don't know anyone who did this in "red" districts or states.

I was projecting a 550 pickup in Fergus and 350 in Meagher,
we only got 309 in Fergus, so I hope we do get 500 in Meagher.

That was a little worse than expected, but Burns is still on track to pick up about 2,800 votes and win by about 1,050.

I agree. Most want to see them weeded out through attrition provided by reform, including no more "catch and release", but not rounded up like wild animals - except the criminals. O'Relilly reported that a full 1/3 of illegals are child molesters, and also commit property crimes and visit violence on innocent people.

It all comes down to Yellowstone. He needs to pick up 1000+ in Yellowstone.

A lot of Gallatin is out too. It needs to hold steady or Burns needs to do slightly better there to win. He's significantly underperforming 2000 there (but overperforming 2000 a bit in Yellowstone).

Well, light, sweet crude is up slightly in Asia. I'll at least eat.

Hayworth's district includes Tempe, which is home to the huge Arizona State University and it's relatively liberal students and faculty. That's why Hayworth lost, and he was also running against a former mayor of Tempe who's well known in that district. I'm sure Hayworth won handily outside of Tempe in Phoenix and Scottsdale. I live in Arizona now, moving to Colorado later this month.
