Losing Libertarians
Washington Times ^ | 11/6/06 | David Boaz

Take a look at independent voters. There are more of them than before, especially in the West. More than 25 percent of Arizona voters now register as independent or third-party voters. And according to a Washington Post-ABC News poll, they've shifted sharply toward the Democrats in this fall's elections.

John Walker Lindh should have be summarily shot by firing squad.

Radical imams in this country who advocate violence against this country should be deported if not US Citizens or tried for tresson if they are.

We should be less concerned with winning hearts and minds in Iraq and more concerned about winning period.

Clearly we didn't act soon enough against al-Qaida, but that's on Billy Jeff Clinton.

Just don't tell me there's no difference between the parties. GWB and the Republicans could be doing a better job. Billy Jeff and the 'Rats did nothing at all, and are now actively giving aid and comfort to our enemies.

I agree completely. I never met a libertarian who did not come off as angry and completely self centered.

I remember a day when "self-centered" was used as a slam by liberals in describing conservatives. It's a damn shame that people on the "right" are now onto this crap.

Listen to yourself...you sound as self absorbed as the Marxists.

DC - just so you know, the poster you're communicating with as openly defended Amway here on FR in the past, so it is understandable how he/she would find individualism to be disgusting.

What's it to you? How about minding your own business? What do you care what I ingest in my body. As for abortion, it is an issue but not only one. Democrats want to control my economic decisions and Republicans want to control my Personal choices. Sorry If being flaky is being right I will choose flaky all the time.

I know. We've had this conversation before. I was just hoping that time and experience could show them the error of their ways.

I guess some folks are doomed to repeat history as they refuse to learn from it.

Libertarian is NOT synonymous with conservative.

Hi Chief. Did you know that Ronald Reagan disagreed with you and called libertarianism the "heart and soul of conservatism"?

Seems like the only thing consistent about Libertarians is that they're pi$$ed at everyone.

Considering that most politicians are power-hungry scumbags, doesn't that make sense? Are you personally not pissed off at politicians in general? If not, I'm envious of your optimism.

The problem with Libertarianism and communism and islam is that they enforce abstractions and utopias...dangerous minefields for humanity as we have seen.

Heh! I didn't know I was self-centered and angry, but thanks for telling me. I need to take issue with the above line. Libertarianism is the opposite of communism, and Libertarians don't cut off each other's heads because one of them is for public schools and another for a strong national defense and immigration policy. Libertarianism is a political philosophy, and like any political philosophy, accommodations need to be made when they meet the real world. I can't imaging many republicans are happy with expanding the federal government at 2-3 times inflation, expanded medicare prescription, or NCLB. I'm not, but I voted straight Republican because of the Dems and because national defense is paramount.

How about you ASK a libertarian before making crap up on your own?

When you consider their position on open borders,

Close them. It's tresspassing. Of course, Bush hasn't done a lot to close the borders either. An unfunded Border Fence isn't exactly what we were looking for.

pedophilia,

Is rape. A child cannot be said to have the life experience or maturity to consent to such acts with an adult. Treat it as rape. Punish it with the death penalty.

abortion on demand,

If it's human, it is murder to kill it.

legalized drugs,

Only hurts the user. Any other "social" costs are only there because of all the socialist "safety nets" we have put in place to protect people from their own stupidity. Let Darwin have them.

etc., it's very plain they have very much in common with the Democrats.

Except respect for private property Rights, individual Rights, laissez-faire capitalism, "taxation is theft", pro-RKBA, and smaller government? Yeah... whatever...

LOL! I love that term "small l Libertarian"...just another term for someone perpetually pi$$ed off about something and want a better term to call them self then "sourpuss".

Did you know that Jim Robinson has endorsed the small-l libertarian Republican Liberty Caucus and allows them to host their forum here on FR?

In Maryland the GOP has a substantial number of 'l'ibertarians who rarely vote outside GOP lines. Many small business owners looking to get crime issue dealt with and tax breaks as well as the military and DoD contactors. The social messages aren't as big a hot button topics as in other states. The bottom line is the GOP sells the right message for the electorate here in MD, and it appears to keep the little l's on board. I've yet to see a Dem say anything that appeals to libertarian types.

I'm totally with you on that. The only Libertarian I've ever voted for was a gubernatorial candidate here in Jersey in the 90's who was a director of Libertarians for Life. The rest of the LP is useless to me.

I realize that Libertarians are not Communists...although at times they have the same glassy eyed stare that some marxists I know display.

And their origins share many similarities.

And yet despite all their bellicose angst and relentless self promotion, they STILL have yet to elect even ONE person to ANY office ANY where.

Johnnie, if you really feel that much "bellicose angst and relentless" denigration of the libertarian philosophy, and are so convinced that the GOP is doing everything right, why worry about their votes. If they agree with the GOP positions and actions, then they'll have no position to run on and they'll vote for you; if not, who cares because you obviously don't need their input.

The truth of the matter is that the GOP wants the votes of the people who support concepts like smaller government, protection of property rights, equal protection under the law, lower taxes, a balanced budget, paying off the national debt, and individual liberty and responsibility, but the GOP doesn't want to actually implement those ideas when they get elected.

If we don't need or want those libertarian votes, then we can do whatever we want if and when we're elected. But if we want those people to vote for us, then we'd better be prepared to embrace and support their values.

We had an "unbeatable majority" when we were "talking the talk," but the voters have a way of holding us accountable when we don't "walk the walk."
