Didn't the Romans allow something similar to this? I remember watching Life of Brian where a man in the People's Liberation Front of Judea announced in the Stadium:
"I want to be a woman, Stan - I want you all to call me Loretta. It's my right as a man.
Stan: But you are not a woman.
Loretta: Don't you oppress me . . . ."
I guess someone in New York wants to replay that scene.
