Okay-true story! or so I'm told...
Last week, I was taking a class on asbestos abatement (passed with flying colors-I'm now a Master Abater.) The instructor told us about an illegal asbestos dumping they were investigating near Fouke, AR (home to the Boggy Creek Monster.)
As they entered Fouke the EPA woman (from Boston) asked about the monster. One of the men said that his brother had been coon hunting near Boggy Creek, and had heard what he described as the most horrifying scream he had ever heard.
The woman from Boston asked "Do you still hunt black people here?"
The man, STUNNED by what she had said replied, "Rac-coon, Debbie, rac-coon!"

100 armed men walked the woods around East Peoria's Cole Hollow Road in search of a monster. The search was called off about 7:45 p.m. when one of the men accidentally shot himself in the foot. I just hope there was banjo music on the soundtrack.

I wouldn't think a story like that would go largely forgotten in Central Illinois. Yet, it is. This is the first I've heard of it in about 30 years. I hunt mushrooms every year along Cole Hollow Road, plenty of mushrooms, no monsters.

I saw hairy monsters on my good days. Wow.
Mrs. L and I were at a party not long ago. It was people she worked with and they were having their annual 'end of season' bon fire.
I was, of course, the designated driver. So I told Mrs. L that she could cut loose a bit. But I also said that the first time she or anyone else repeated themself to me we were leaving.
It's a personal rule I use to tell when it's time to go and it's served me well.
We lasted just a hair under 3 hours...

Stranger things have happened. For example, catching a Bull Shark on the Miss. river in Alton, Illinois in 1937.

There are a fair amount of people who live up and down that road and in the area. It's not exactly like it is in the middle of nowhere. A creature living there would have to be very good at avoiding people.

A few years back a former class mate of my wife's was visiting here for the week end. I acted as bartender serving them screw drivers. it is the only time I've seen my wife have "one too many"
It was kind of fun watching two women getting soused and thinking, thank God I don't do that anymore.
They were hilarious.

Closely related to the Mario Cuomo Monster of NY State.

It was supposedly spotted in the area of the brick yard and you're right, it's a populated area with a smalll stretch of woods.
I lived in E.P. at the time and there were not "100 armed men walking the woods"

In addition to being one of the two sober drivers at the party, I also happened to be the oldest sober guy there.
There's nothing like watching a bunch of 20 and 30 somethings drink themselves silly. I mean 20 year olds manage to sound stupid enough sober. Toss in a few tequila shooters and IQ points just evaporate.
If you still attend parties with drinkers, do try Lurkers "When Someone Repeats Themself" rule. It's never let me down.
Besides, I can always say "I left the party long before that happened Mr. Prosecutor." and be telling the truth.

Must have been a Democrat or a cop.

I just want to say for the record that 34 years ago, when I had a full beard I was never, not once, not ever anywhere near Holmes and Delavan out by the Murphy farm after drinking a 12-pack by myself. I was never there, for the record.

Anything south of I-80 might as well be another country. Watch it, buster. I grew up there. ;-)
And just what do you think we Downstaters-by-birth have to say about Chicago and its machine politics?!
