Former Kaufman DA kills self as police try to serve warrant

TERRELL - Former Kaufman County District Attorney Louis "Bill" Conradt Jr. killed himself as police tried to serve an arrest warrant for soliciting sex with a minor, authorities said.

Conradt, 56, was chief felony assistant attorney for nearby Rockwall County at the time of his death Sunday.

Police forced their way into Conradt's Terrell home after hearing a gunshot when he refused to answer the door, a police spokesman said. The officers found Conradt with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He later died at a hospital in Dallas, about 30 miles west of Terrell.

Police in the town of Murphy in nearby Collin County said Conradt had solicited sex from a decoy posing online as a 13-year-old. Murphy police were attempting to serve an arrest warrant and a search warrant for Conradt's computer when he shot himself, Murphy Police spokesman Sgt. Snow Robertson said.

Robertson said there was nothing police could to do prevent Conradt's death, which happened while an NBC crew waited outside on the street.

"When somebody decides to do this, there is nothing you can do," he said.

Conradt was Kaufman County's elected district attorney for more than two decades before resigning in 2002 to run for a judgeship. He lost and later took the Rockwall County job.

Murphy Mayor Bret Bishop told the newspaper that he hopes Murphy won't be used again as a trap for child predators.

"We're going to do whatever we need to do to make sure this doesn't continue," he said. "I think it's a noble cause, but our police department is hired to serve and protect our citizens, and not to expose them to outside threats."

I expected this to happen sooner later. At least he didn't further offend by sitting in front of the camera defending himself and rationalizing his behavior for the entire country to see. The thing is, even with all this shameful exposure likely won't deter these creeps from acting on their sick impulses.

What is the psychology of smart, professional men wanting to have sex with minors? I think it has alot to do with today's women...I'M NOT SHIFTING BLAME...that's squarely on the individual's shoulder, but I just don't think this went on 20, 30 years ago...at least to this extent. I'm sure I can do a google search and a million and one articlesw would come up....

I don't think so.

Several pedophiles have stated that it actually never occurred to them to do until they found sites on the Internet. Then there are the recruiters from NAMBLA and other perverts.

The reason I'm asking is very often when the articles don't say "girl", it's a boy. And the homosexual editors don't like to publicize that a goodly number of homosexuals are after adolescent boys.

That's what I wonder. I mean I know there have always been people who do anti social things, but it seems like there is an explosion, and I wonder if part of the reason isn't that the media (including the net) have made it very seductive, very easy and very in your face. In addition, they have sexualized our children shamelessly.

He was, in fact, a Democrat. And he voted twice. All right, the last part isn't true.

Did he think the decoy was a boy or girl?

From MSNBC:

NBC News' "Dateline" was in Texas reporting on its "To Catch A Predator" series in conjunction with online watchdog group Perverted Justice. In the midst of that effort, Rockwall County Assistant District Attorney Louis W. Conradt Jr. contacted a decoy from Perverted Justice who was posing as a 13-year-old boy. Local authorities launched an investigation into Conradt's online communications and went to his home with an arrest warrant. In the course of that investigation, Conradt committed suicide. There was no contact whatsoever between Conradt and "Dateline" at any point in the investigation.

Police said Conradt had not gone to the house but they believed he would.

My question is, after reading this same story (generally sans suicide) a thousand times, what guy is dumb enough to do this?

The same thing could be said of the "NBC crew (that) waited outside on the street".

I suppose when police go from being peace officers to law enforcement officers (writing tickets for revenue) more crime will be going unchecked inside government offices. Maybe it will take the media to police the police but I don't give it much hope seeing as how the media selectively polices politicians.
