CA: High Fire Danger Into Monday ~ Santa Ana Winds again for Southern California....

The two-week anniversary of the deadly Esperanza fire is still a few days away, but already Southern California will have to deal with another round of Santa Ana winds. As an upper-level ridge of high pressure builds into the Southwest, the north to northeast winds circulating around the ridge will blow offshore tonight and into Monday. With the winds gusting up to 40 mph over the mountains and through the passes and canyons, any fire that starts could quick spread. In addition, the extremely dry and warm conditions created by the Santa Ana winds (Downtown Los Angeles looks to crack the 90-degree mark on Monday) will put the region at even more risk for wildfires to spark and grow quickly.

The sad part of this weather pattern is that arsonists look forward to it to do their dirty work...and like the most recent fire they often know the special places to start unstoppable infernos.

It has been claimed that Islamo-facist terrorists were responsible for many forest fires in Europe several years ago and may be including the US for upcoming dirty work.

Even the most innocent remarks or suspicious activity ought to be recorded and reported.

Lefties can call it paranoia. Sensible citizens will consider it common sense.

Since the start of the month, a parade of storm systems has brought rain to the Northwest, especially west of the Cascades. Through Tuesday, that parade will continue as another and even stronger system approaches and pushes into the region. Flood Watches are in effect over western Washington from this evening to Monday afternoon as the jet stream will set up to the north, allowing a hose of Pacific moisture to once again be turned on and directed at the Northwest. The hardest hit areas will be the Olympics and Cascade Mountains of western Washington and northwestern Oregon, where up to ten additional inches, locally more, will pour down before the rain ends on Tuesday. Five to eight inches will deluge places like Seattle and Portland, while up to five inches comes down on the mountains of northern Idaho and far western Montana. The Flood Watches have been issued as rivers and streams are already running high due to the rainfall from the past few days; in addition, watch for mudslides to occur especially over recently burned areas.

As shown above, the rain shadow effect of the Cascades, when the air warms and dries as it blows down the leeward side of mountains, will prevent central parts of Washington and Oregon from receiving more than an inch of rain. Its summer-like weather in what should be a cold month here in southern California. You never know when the Santa Anas blow in from the desert to heat things up along the coast.

But it does seem we get these santa ana east winds in Ventura County (used to call them "santana winds") every October, and sometimes into November...

...it's my LEAST favorite weather pattern of all, even from when I was a little kid! I happen to love cool, rainy, overcast days, because hot, dry days mess up my sinuses and kick my @ss when I run or bike.

Man I sound old. Hell, I am old (turning 51 next month!)

You are right about the Santa Ana conditions here in Southern California, they happen almost every year from late September through November (when everywhere else is experiencing traditional Fall weather).

Our fire season runs from June until December, but the Santa Anas are the peak period of greatest threat for fire.

Just saw a report and video clip on local Fox channel (11 ) no mention of homes threatened,...they did say the wind out of the Cajon pass wasn't as strong as the last blow...where we had the Cabazon blaze.
