UN call for moratorium on executions

UN human rights chief Louise Arbour today called for a moratorium on executions after former Iraqi president Saddam Hussein was sentenced to death by an Iraqi court.
She also called for the rights of defendants to a fair appeal to be fully respected.
A credible appeals process is an essential part of fair-trial guarantees, she said in a statement.
This is particularly important in this instance, in which the death penalty has been imposed.
Those convicted today should have every opportunity to exhaust their appellate remedies in a fair way, and whatever the outcome of an appeal, I hope the government will observe a moratorium on executions.

Wouldn't we know the UN would come to the defense of a convicted genocidal mass-murderer?

It's time for the US to get out of the UN and for the US to kick the UN out of the country. The UN is a joke. Send them back to the League of Nations building. Or maybe they could go to Venezuela.

"called for a moratorium on executions "
So now the UN is the "supreme leader" and wants to overrule the courts of sovereign countries?

Now, 'European values' of opposing death-penalty is put against 'UN values' of no-intervening with individual country's law. We'll see if the Islamic countries will go along with any resolution banning death penalty.

Luckily the Shiites that are running Iraq don't give a darn what the UN thinks and pretty much hate the UN for propping up Saddam for so many years. I predict Saddam will be dead within 90 days...

What was the United Nations thinking? To state the obvious, this does not bolster their credibility.

I suspect the thugs at the UN would have no objections if Saddam Hussein gave up the numbers to his secret bank accounts to them. If he dies, the payoffs stop.

Should the UN also come out against the daily murderous gangwars going on in Baghdad? No, they worry about Sheikh Saddam.
To: Vasilli22
I guess they miss their oil-for-food kickbacks. That and the distinct probability that Saddam will start naming names on his way to the gallows.

Surprise! Surprise! NOT! Always in the corner of evil incarnate!
Let's call for a moratorium on the UN! Shut up and do...nothing! It's what they're good at!
To: apillar
If it takes that long for them to storm the prison and kill Saddam and his party.
To: Aussie Dasher
Well....why am I not surprised at this article...blech!
I actually think that hanging is too good for him...
He wants to have a firing squad...and I think that is too good for him.
I think he should have a suicide belt strapped to him...and he has to wear it...until it goes off...BUT,, he won't know when it will...could be minutes, hours, days.....
And then.........BOOM!!!!
