BAGHDAD, Iraq - Iraqi Shiites broke into wild celebration on Sunday after Saddam Hussein was sentenced to hang, but his fellow Sunnis paraded through the former dictator's hometown chanting, "We will avenge you Saddam."

In Sadr City, the Shiite stronghold of northeast Baghdad, youths took to the streets dancing and singing, despite a curfew declared for the capital and two neighboring provinces.
"Execute Saddam," they chanted. Many carried posters bearing the image of Muqtada al-Sadr, the radical anti-American cleric whose Mahdi Army militia effectively runs the district.

The media is getting right to work twisting this and trying to make Iraq look much more divided than it is.
Every Sunni I know (and I know plenty of them) are delighted with this. Almost every single Iraqi is happy about this.
Only the former Ba'ath party officials and those who were in Saddam's special favor are unhappy about this....and they are a tiny, tiny minority.
God help me, I hate the media.
Don't feel too bad about hating the media. I think it's the most natural response in the world, since they are so eminently hate-able. How they can live with themselves is simply beyond me.
The media has their anti-American template to uphold. We really appreciate your posts. Nothing better than a boots on the ground prospective that you give us. Thank you.
oh my gosh, too funny !!!
Well, LISTEN, young Mr. Muqtada al-Sadr, just WHO captured Saddam Hussein in the first place.
Ungrateful little pup.
Keep in mind, that simply because Saddam Hussein was considered to be a Sunni, that did not mean that the Sunnis as a whole suffered much less than the Kurds and the Shi'ites. Remember, Saddam called his two sons-in-law back from where they had fled, and promised them "pardon".
On August 9, 1995, Lieutenant-general Hussein Kamel Majid, the head of Iraq's weapons of mass destruction program and a close confidant of Hussein, defects to neighbouring Jordan along with his brother Saddam Kamel. Majid's subsequent confirmation of the existence of a biological weapons program forces Iraq to admit that it had imported at least 39 tons of growth media for biological agents.
Acting on information provided by Majid, the UNSCOM inspectors locate secret laboratories for the production of biological weapons, including anthrax, botulinum and aflatoxin. All known stockpiles and equipment for the production of bioweapons are destroyed.
Majid and his brother, who are also Hussein's sons-in-law, return to Iraq in February 1996 after they are assured that they will be granted a pardon by Hussein. Instead, they are killed in a gunfight with their relatives on 23 February, a few days after their return. Hussein is reported to have "explicitly endorsed the killings, which, as he saw them, 'purified' and healed the family by amputating from the 'hand' an 'ailing finger'".
And you thought you had problems with your in-laws.
the media has been saying this for days prior to the conviction, they said that no matter how it comes out one side is going to be upset, and the other not.
Hardly anybody is upset. Well, the Democrats and the media are, but they don't count.
Among the Iraqis, very few people are very disappointed about this. Just the Convicted Thug's buddies, pretty much.
I'd say 98% of the people in this country are elated.
Hang the SOB, sooner rather than later.

The balanced form of the sentence implies a certain balance between the response of the Shiites and the Sunnis. This sense of equivalence is reinforced by the "but", a non-neutral term that denotes negation or counterbalancing. The writer should have used "while" instead.
It feels like the writer has his finger on the scales so that the reaction of a relatively small group of Sunnis, Saddam's homies, seems as weighty as the reaction of what is probably all Shiites.
I tell you, it's hard to figure out why the media supports a thug like Saddam over our forces.
What's so wrong with what we're trying to do over there that the media would hate us?
So our mission has not been without some bumps in the road, but the alternative is?
Thanks for being a part of the effort. I'm not sure what you do over there, but thanks for representing us! You have my respect!
Hey, this isn't an appeal, it's a boarding pass!"
Well, OK, my favorite part was when the translator said "Saddam, you will die by hanging..."
But Ramsey getting OWNED was a close second.
