WASHINGTON (AP) -- More than half of U.S. commercial airports don't have a 1,000-foot margin at the end of a runway, an overrun area the federal government says is needed as a safety zone, according to a new report.
Some of the busiest airports in the country -- including Los Angeles International Airport, Chicago's O'Hare International Airport and Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport -- have more than one runway that doesn't meet safety standards, according to statistics supplied by the Federal Aviation Administration.
"Our runways are out of shape, and the to move to correct the problem," Sen. Frank Lautenberg, , said Thursday. "If we don't get serious about runway problems, the result could be disastrous."

I was up on the observation deck last week, watching for my wife's flight. They landed hot on that runway and got to the jetway very quickly. It turned out that some guy had a seizure right before the landing. I'm glad they had a little extra margin for safety.
That's silly. ;)
There's a video link at post 21. The poor girl falls down TWICE!
(And what's up with the watering can...?)
Still being,
What about American at Little Rock? Or even the Delta at Lexington. Speaking of Southwest, they had an overrun at Burbank as well.
If you made them put 1000-foot overruns on the runways at Midway, nothing bigger than a Twin Otter would be able to land there ever again, it looks like. The joys of urban airports.
Maybe Mayor Daley will close it and plow the runways in the middle of the night...y'know, for "safety" purposes.

This isn't like the early days of jet airplanes, where the relatively low thrust of the jet engines really did mean much longer runway requirements.
Bush has really been an outstanding President. Since he came to office all personal responsibility for any inconvenient or illegal act has become his fault. Every sin committed is Bush's fault. We are all faultless because all of our faults are Bush's fault. Wow! What a guy. Thank your boss for making this clear to me, now I can drive as fast as I want, be as rude as I want and do any other thing I wish without that nasty personal responsibility thing hanging over my head.
P.S. Your boss is an idiot! I bet he is a real thrill to work for.
Got one of these of Burbank? (.... one of the places I have seen 737s sparking from slight impact of the tail on the runway ... :)
