Getting Serious About Iran: A Military Option
Real Clear Politics, Commentary ^ | November 4, 2006 | Authur Herman

Posted on 11/04/2006 7:33:57 AM PST by Old Badger

As the impasse over Iran’s nuclear-weapons program grows inexorably into a crisis, a kind of consensus has taken root in the minds of America’s foreign-policy elite. This is that military action against Iran is a sure formula for disaster............. But, as I have tried to show, the most immediate menace Iran poses is not nuclear but conventional in nature. How might it be dealt with militarily, and is it conceivable that both perils could be dealt with at once? What follows is one possible scenario for military action.

Herman gives an excellent analysis of our options pertaining to Iran. It's a long read and not for the faint at heart (commonly referred to as wennie liberals).

Iran has been at war with the US since 1979, I wonder when we are going to fight back.

The measures will be finally applied by the Israelis - they have the fewest inhibitions and the strongest incentive. Why should there be an iran?

Mid-2008 is the dead-line for any US/Israeli led conventional war against Iran. If we don't stop them until then, they will have nuclear weapons and the will and capability to use them.
Any war after that will be a doomsday scenario involving Nuclear weapons. And the west lacks the will to fight this kind of war (again).
The lesser of all evils are preemptive strikes somewhen between 2007 to mid-2008.

"Iran has been at war with the US since 1979, I wonder when we are going to fight back."

As soon as we elect more conservatives to the U.S. Senate and House. Every conservative, and republican, had better realize that what's at stake in this election is our countries very survival. If we don't turn out in mass, the hate America democrats will win along with the terrorists forcing this country to go down the tubes. Even though the Republican congress has not performed according to conservative expectations, the remedy is to elect more conservatives and not allow democrats to gain any type of foothold. Then we can act on Iran with support from congress. As it stands now, to many cowards occupy the halls of congress.

We should handle Iran like we should have handled Iraq.

Stand back and zap the country with our superior air and naval power until the rubble stops bouncing and the sand turns to glass.

Then go in, occupy the oil fields with special forces and operate them under a U.S. protectorate. We should never put any other troops in the Middle East for Islamic survivors to grapple with.

The first lesson in Military Strategy 101 is never to fight on your enemy's turf or on your enemy's terms. Our generals seem to have been attending sensitivity classes when that vital lessor was taught.

If civilization is to survive the barbarian uprising we must be brutal and ruthless. You cannot negotiate with a hurricane.

Even if Democrat/Socialist take control of our government, the war in Iraq will not change because too many Americans have clearly lost the will to win.

Losing the will to win has been the first indication of decline with all of the great civilizations in history who has failed.

It's a good read... and it clarifies why removing troops from Iraq is insane. The crux of the Islam-fascist biscuit lies in Iran... and the longer we put the fight off... the costlier it will be

Agree with most everything said except the bigger problem is with Russia and China. We cannot afford another cold war, when the world can operate without us. We have placed us very dependent on foreign nations. As soon as we realize we are not the only superpower in the world with nukes being so common. All out conflicts with nukes will literally destroy continents. And don't forget, mankind is pure stupid.

"too many Americans have clearly lost the will to win."

The reason for this is that this administration has allowed the Democrats and the media to define and frame the situation continually as "we are losing the war" when it is exactly the opposite. We have had enormous and continual wins and are still winning on all fronts even though the Iraqi leaders are frustrating some of our efforts. The administration should rebut any allegations that there are no plans by asking " I guess we have just been milling around over there and Saddam was captured, his Army defeated, a new government established all by itself." The American public has been dumbed down by our liberal government schools to the point they can't think or analyze critical situations. I hate to use this word but some people are just plain stupid.

Rick Santorum is right on with this Iran mess. Would to God that all would listen to him, seriously!

IMO the key element required to make all such plans work is the assumption that the end result will be an Iranian government willing to accept a predominant US influence in the politics and economic policies of the Gulf States.

If we can’t get that, we have just increased the scope and intensity of the land war in Mesopotamia, for example the Iranians would likely increase their support of the Shiite insurgency in Iraq - which in turn could only be countered by extensive, open-ended ground operations in Iran.

And it seems to me that the chances of such regime change are pretty slim; that while we might succeed in displacing the Mullahs, it’s highly unlikely their replacement would accept US plans for the region – we might for example ask ourselves how we would react if Iran if it undertook to install a “friendly’ government in Washington by attacking the oil platforms and refineries on our Gulf Coast; even if such an attempt could succeed short term, ultimately any US government that achieved legitimacy would have to do so by opposing Iran’s policies, likely for generations.

Your absolutely correct. If conservatives are holding against him his support for Spector in the last election, they had better get over that gaffe. Why he did it I can only guess? I'd still vote for him if I was living in his state. He's one of the great conservatives and should be definitely reelected. Also, he's definitely presidential material.

An excellent essay and a convincing analysis of the situation.

What we can add now, information which probably wasn't available to the author when this went to the printers, is yesterday's announcement that SIX ARAB REGIMES now claim the right to develop nuclear energy, i.e., nuclear weapons.

The Arabs sat back for three years while the Old Euros talked and talked and talked. Meanwhile, France was probably selling the Iranian regime the technology they needed, and maybe Germany was, and certainly China, Russia, and North Korea.

Either we act now, or World War IV is going to turn nuclear. And Russia, which is already starting to work against us openly, will conclude that we are too weak to prevent them from acting even more openly.

I agree, too, that Bush has GOT to do something about the treasonous media that is crippling American will. For a start, he could tell his Justice Department that it's time to investigate The New York Times and the Washington Post for repeated treasonous leaks of top secret information vital to our enemies. And to make it crystal clear to CNN that those who are not with us are against us.

I have advocated a unilateral US blockade of petroleum into and out of Iran for months now.

Same goes for China and their pi$$-boy... NKorea. When evil senses weakness... it acts. Often, lesser evils will be emboldened by an aggressor-state and either join it... or facilitate its victory.

The lesson being... it's always better to control events than let them control you.

As long as Bush allows this to continue, they will continue and get brazenly worse each and every time. These people are openly treasonous with impunity. They are in effect controlling this administration to fight a politically correct war in Iraq, but also giving aid and comfort to the enemy. If Bush's Department of Justice prosecuted them to the fullest extent of the law, this crap would stop overnight.

As to the politically correct war, one of the few really bad mistakes made was that Falluja, Najaf and Al Sadar should have been decimated and killed notwithstanding the fact Iraqis may not "like us." That has come back to haunt us. Anytime your actions are based toward trying to get some to like you've lost control over your situation.

All too true. We should worry less about being liked, and more about being feared and respected. As far as Arabs are concerned, that's the most we can hope for in any case.
