A N. Korean Shell Lands on Chinese Village

An unidentified shell landed on a field near a house

On Oct. 1, a shell flew in and landed on a field next to senior citizen's hall at Qing-shi-zhen, Jian City, Jilin Province, China. People were startled, and reported to police.

Later, experts from PLA Engineering Unit inspected the shell at the scene and concluded that it is a anti-personnel howitzer shell, and fired from a an artillery unit stationed at Manpo District, Jagang Province, N. Korea. They disassembled it and the further examination showed that it is indeed of N. Korean origin, and the explosive inside is replaced with some mixed substance including cement powder, making it unable to detonate. It was stuck into 1m underground and left a crater with 2m radius.

Chinese experts dissuaded people from talking about it, saying that they need further investigation to determine who did it and why.

When tourists from Yanbian and Liaoliang Province go sightseeing at Mt. Baekdu, they pass through Jian, where ancient Koguryo fortresses are located. It draws a lot of S. Korean tourists.

With so many murders, burglaries, and human trafficking, it is also the most crime-ridden place along Sino-N. Korean border, and a major illegal border-crossing passage runs through it. Last June, a soldier from an N. Korean artillery unit smuggled an artillery shell into China, prompting the entire Jian police to work on this incident, and, on Oct. 10, N. Korean soldiers stationed at Jagang Province crossed Yalu River at night, robbed a house, killing a Chinese couple.

Local Chinese residents all complain, "N. Korean troops never fail to come here to rob us on the night before their major holidays(New Year's Day, Feb. 16, Aug. 15, Sept. 9, and Oct. 10.)"

This gives a new meaning to the word, "loose cannon.":-)

So, some NK arty troops want to sell artillery shells for cash. What I am wondering is who is going to buy it ans why. A cheap way to procure explosive, or scrap metal?

The place is turning into 'Wild North East' for China.

Maybe it's a way to smuggle drugs... that powder that replaced the gunpowder could be anything.

Desperate NKs taking a test shot with inert shell to see if their escape plans work?

Maybe they just need some time to consult with the Clintonazis and figure out a way to blame it on Bush.

Concrete in artillary shells? One wonders why the Chinese published that detail. Concrete is a gray powder, so as to be less likely to betray a problem during loading (although the powder smells different). Could be a NK soldier's plea for China to attack and take over on the promise to sabotage the ammunition. IOW, they'll shoot back (or they'd be killed) but that the stuff they're shooting has been sabotaged to be ineffective, in which case, by the Chinese having published the story the game is up!

Or it could be that the Chinese are assuring their people that the threat of getting shot at is minimal by telling the locals that the shells are duds.

It would be fun to snoop by that ammo dump to see if there's a NK junior officer running a work party to check the shells.
