OAKLAND — Political and social activists, historians and educators from the United States and around the world are gathering in the Bay Area this weekend to discuss reparations for slavery of African people and colonialism in Africa.
"The wealth of the West is built on slavery of African people," said Penny Hess, chairwoman of the African People Solidarity Committee. "White people need to recognize it and support (reparations)."
Hess is one of nine speakers during the two-day event set for Saturday in Oakland and Sunday in San Francisco. The event celebrates African People Solidarity Day and calls for the white community to be involved in the Uhuru movement, the liberation of Africa and African people.
The Solidarity Committee, with a majority white membership, was formed in 1976 to support the black movement.
Helping to ease hardship in Africa should go beyond charity concerts and adoption of African children by movie stars, Hess said.
It is about a movement that recognizes resources that sustain the Western economy — including oil, diamonds and coltan (a mineral used in the high-technology industry) — come at the expense of African laborers, who work for the equivalent of $2 per day, she said.

It's people like you, freeloaders, that give honest, hard working blacks a bad name. You want reparations for slavery? Show me ONE black person that was recently a slave here in America and I'll consider it.
I am the descendant of slaves (Louisiana Creole), and I work for a living. I suggest you stop encouraging this nonsense and focus your efforts to promote education in our young people, instead of trying to cast our race as victims in need of another handout.

Why are we only concerned about injustices that happened 140-500 years ago. I am fairly certain that sometime within the past 100,000 years one of my ancestors was greatly wronged by another human being. As soon as I find his descendants I will ask for some form of compensation. No justice, no peace!

Some of my ancestors were mistreated by the British and the French a long time ago, so I demand reparations! The least the British and French can do is give me a new car, as long as the car isn't British or French! And I think way back some of my ancestors might have been mistreated by the Roman Empire. Down with imperialism! I demand the Italians give me reparations! And some of my ancestors were Protestant, but before Protestantism existed, they were Catholic. So I demand reparations from Protestants and Catholics for every time a Protestant persecuted a Catholic and for every time a Catholic persecuted a Protestant. It is only fair that I work both sides. The world revolves around me, gimmie, gimmie, gimmie!

Hey Dummies...we have already tried reparations...LBJ's great society and Govt. handouts/welfare assistance produced not wealth but poverty, tenement slums and broken families. Michael Steele's mother refused government assistance and yet put him through parochial school. The govt. should keep taxes low and let workers hold on to more of their earnings. Will be so much more successful and wealthy vs. a measly handout from the govt. Dr. Martin Luther Kig did not seek reparations...just an equal opportunity for African-Americans to succeed via character building work and enterprise endeavors.
The mentality of the reparations demagogues is so hateful and ignorant that they would probably spit on the graves of the Union Civil War dead. For that matter, they are so hateful and depraved that I bet they would even call the black soldiers who fought for their freedom "Uncle Toms."
OK, give them their reparations. At the same time, eliminate all affirmative action and minority set-aside programs. That will end the matter, won't it?
Reparations have already been paid in full and then some - by the blood and the lives of Union soldiers.
