Cardin demands pulling of poll, saying 'gutter politics' are used
The Baltimore Sun ^ | Friday, November 3, 2006 | Nicole Fuller

U.S. Rep. Benjamin L. Cardin's Senate campaign fired off a tersely worded letter to rival Lt. Gov. Michael S. Steele yesterday, demanding an end to "offensive push-poll" phone calls from a conservative group that equates Cardin's support for embryonic stem cell research to "medical experiments on unborn babies."

"While it's true that you and I have a fundamental difference on embryonic stem cell research, this sort of gutter politics must stop now," Cardin said in the letter.

Steele, who is challenging Cardin in the Senate race, is opposed to embryonic stem cell research.

Steele spokesman Doug Heye responded: "The Steele campaign has absolutely nothing to do whatsoever with these phone calls. These are the kind of politics that Michael Steele is running to change."

The telephone poll asks if voters approve of "medical experiments on unborn babies," and then says "Cardin supports funding for embryonic stem cell research, which Steele opposes," according to the Cardin campaign.

According to the calls, the poll is sponsored by an organization called Common Sense Maryland. The group's Web site said the efforts are being paid for by another organization, Common Sense Ohio.

The Common Sense Maryland Web site says Cardin has opposed tax relief, traditional marriage and stronger immigration laws and supports abortion.

The poll also asks if voters want "taxes raised or lowered" and then mentions "Cardin has voted for tax increases," the Cardin campaign said.

A telephone number with a Northern Virginia area code that appeared on the Caller IDs of some who received the calls appeared to be disconnected yesterday.

Some voters have charged that the group's name was misleading and possibly intended to confuse voters into thinking the calls were coming from Common Cause Maryland, a nonpartisan campaign-finance watchdog group.

Well Ben, do you or do you not support medical experiments on unborn babies?

That's rich. A democrat pretending to care about negative politics. Wonders never cease.

Common Cause Maryland, a nonpartisan campaign-finance watchdog group . . .

About as much as the Washington ComPost is a non-partisan newspaper!

That's not the point. I don't want my personnel views told to possible voters. /S

He's one to talk. His commercials are despicable, and so are the ones run by the DNC on his behalf.

Umm, didn't Michael Fox implore Maryland voters to back Cardin and not Steele because Steele was against this research? So why shouldn't the repubs respond?

He was against it, then he was for it. I guess according to this article he is against it again. Dems don't need positions. This election is about Bush. The fact that he's not running doesn't matter.

embryos=human beings who are not fully formed, or, babies who have not yet reach "term". Therefore they are, in fact, unborn babies.

So, what's the issue?

Naw, Cardin doesn't support 'spermints' ~ just cut up them babies and toss 'em in the trash.

I think he's trying to parse the subtle nuances a tad too tight.

Pro-abortion types don't even know what lies they tell.

Dems sure don't like it when you use their tactics on them.

Well, since many people believe embryonic stem cell research is experimenting on unborn babies (and how could it NOT be, they are clearly babies, and they are clearly unborn), there is NOTHING WRONG with this poll.

Steele specifically supports ALL stem cell research that does not destroy human life. Cardin disagrees with him, which means Carding supports stem cell research that DOES destroy human life.

And in fact, Cardin is on record OPPOSING stem cell research if it doesn't include research that destroys human life.

Cardin has some nerve, inviting Fox to campaign for him and to lie about Steele's position, and then to complain about a group which accurately portrays Cardin's position.

The libs are really for "partial birth experimentation", instead of plunging a knife into the skull of the unborn, just remove the all useful parts, and use the "matter" for experiments. Much better that just the first stages and it 'kills two birds with one stone'. It's a twofer for the demonRATs. They don't worry, I just saw a headline that says 50% of Americans doubt the existance of God, we'll all find out.

So Cardin supports partial birth abortion but gets offended at a question about medical testing on the unborn? Me think the lady doth protest too much.

It IS offensive that Mr. Cardin favors slicing and dicing unborn human beings for parts, but I'm not sure what's so offensive about telling the truth about it.

Get a grip, Benny. You're going down and you richly deserve it.

Cardin getting desparate; he sees the race turning to Steele. With all the recent endorsements that Steele has gotten, especially those from PGC and the African Americans, Cardin knows he is in danger of losing a seat for the dems. Steele is the MAN, and he deserves to win. I only hope the people of Maryland are smart enough to recognize this. The dems had a chance to move a black man into leadership with Kwazi, and they turned him down. If the NAACP had any principles, they would come out and endorse Steele. But I'm not holding my breath.

Steele needs to remind him... plantation days are over, that only works with McCain and Obama.
